Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Intern

What Will You Do as an ESG Intern?
As an Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Intern, you will develop and manage ESG analytics of key processes and data streams for global STERIS. The ESG Intern will have exposure to domestic and international business, regulations, committees, and projects to ensure STERIS compliance. Ideally, the Intern would work full-time hours May - August, with the possibility of transitioning to a part-time Intern or continuing as a full-time Intern upon resuming classes in the Fall and depending on availability.  

Under the guidance and supervision of experienced STERIS ESG representatives, the intern's duties and responsibilities include:
  • Develop a process or roadmap for gathering, analyzing, and reporting on sustainability initiatives, including energy use, water use, waste management, carbon emissions, renewable energy, and other ESG programs. This includes working with STERIS's 200+ global facilities to track and upload data onto a platform. The objective may require training teams and personnel to manually enter data into a platform.
  •  Assist in the submissions of formal rating firms, including EcoVadis, CDP (data verification), MSCI, ISS, and others.
  •  Engage and collaborate with ESG and sustainability teams and committees to optimize sustainable operations around energy, water, and waste reduction projects and initiatives.
  • Support in greenhouse gas emission inventorying and baselining (scope 3 emissions accounting), climate action planning (climate, energy, and water stress analysis), data verification, and program development. 
  • Create and implement surveys through Microsoft surveys or Survey Monkey. 
  •  Desktop research and evaluation on new software, platforms, technologies, and vendors to improve efficiencies by reducing waste, time, and capital.
  •  A stretch goal is around scope 3 emissions carbon accounting. Intern would need to understand and develop a system to continuously monitor data on STERIS's data management software Cognos and Tableau.

Education Requirements:
  • Minimum Educational Requirement: Successful completion of Junior level coursework or above by May 2023. The preferred candidate is near completion of college and is looking for a full-time position in May 2024 or sooner. 
  • Coursework appropriate for academic standing (minimum of a 3.0 GPA desired).
  •   Preferred majors include computer science, sustainability, engineering, accounting, finance, economics, internal audit, or other quantitative fields of study.
  •  Strong English proficiency (written and verbal), other languages a plus 

Experience, Knowledge, or Skills:
  •  Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Some knowledge and experience with relevant standards, regulations, and reporting frameworks, including EcoVadis, CDP, SASB, CSRD, GRI, TCFD, and others. 
  • Strong analytical and data-driven decision-making skills and can interpret, analyze and present data and trends.
  • Ability to collaborate with peers, management, and business partners and enjoys working closely in a small team environment.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently.
  • Presentation skills, including public speaking and presentation creation using PowerPoint or a similar program.
  •  A passion for ESG, sustainability, DEI, and data analytics. 

Key Info:

  • Paid internship $17.50-$20/hr, depending on year of completion and major
  • Full-time hours (May - August), with the possibility of transitioning to part-time (20 hours) or continuing full-time depending on availability upon resuming classes in the Fall. 
  • Location Minneapolis, Minnesota – hybrid office work from onsite (3 days minimally) and work from home opportunity. First two weeks in office full-time for on-boarding.
  • This internship is for the summer of 2023 (May–August), with the desired extension to part-time intern or continuation of full-time intern hours until the student graduates with a potential full-time offer after graduation.
