Latino Heritage Internship, National Park Service (New Orleans): Summer Musician

Start Date: May 15th, 2023
End Date: August 4th, 2023
Compensation: $640 a week paid every two weeks. Travel costs to the site and back home are covered by the program. 
Car is required

The Latino Heritage Internship Program seeks to engage ethnically and racially diverse young professionals in natural resource careers.
Must be a U.S. citizen or legal resident.
All interns must be fully vaccinated for covid-19 prior to the start of their internship.

Position Description:
The intern will help to plan, organize, and provide support for the park’s signature summer camp, ¡Qué Viva la música! They will work directly with the camp musical director for all planning preparations of materials, activities, and logistics, and work with partnering organization Familias Unidas en Accion for camp enrollment, a transportation plan to the park, and volunteer and counselor recruitment. The intern will also provide daily support during the camp itself, which is typically held in late June.
Intern Qualifications:
Interns selected for the NPSCF Program should possess:
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and experience
  • Strategic thinking ability
  • The ability to self-start/work independently
  • Flexibility/resourcefulness
  • The ability to adapt new skills and ideas to the public sector
–Must be conversational in Spanish and enjoy working with children, elementary through 7th grade.
–Must be organized and able to meet milestones and deadlines.
–Must be enthusiastic and energetic towards all the planning and prep work involved in a two-week camp.
–Must be able to provide support and assistance to the camp’s musical director and maintain clear communication at all times with musical director.
–Must be able to insert NPS specific activities like JR Ranger Program and ensure participants learn about the areas NPS sites.
–Must be able to coordinate filed trips to local attractions and NPS sites.
Physical/Natural Environment: The park is within walking distance of a Rouses grocery store and is located in downtown New Orleans and the park is actively engaged with many members of our local Latino communities.
Work Environment: Summers in New Orleans are hot and humid, but 95% percent of the work will be done indoor with AC.
