Summer Internship, National Park Service (Tallahassee): Collections Assistant

Weekly Stipend: $580.00
Relocation Allowance: $350.00

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The participant will assist with the SEAC’s comparative collection, including the zooarcheology, ceramic, and lithic comparative collections. The primary emphasis of this position is the inventory of the zooarcheology comparative collection; update comparative collection databases; accessioning new specimens into collections; rehousing specimens; and develop synoptic collection. Other projects potentially available is the scanning of some skeletal and shell elements for online access; development of a seed collection; lithic identification; and organize historic and Native American ceramic collections.

DELIVERABLES
Specific products, goals, and deliverables will be developed based on intern’s strengths and the specific project.

DESIRED INTERN QUALIFICATIONS
  • Applicants could be any undergraduate or graduate students whose educational background or career objectives are in archeology, museum studies, biology, paleontology, osteology, or related fields. An interest in working as a professional archeologist or museum specialist is preferred. Projects and expectations will be adapted on the intern’s knowledge, experience, and skills. Critical thinking, openness, and flexibility are ideal strengths. Physical hand-writing skills with an ability to write small legible letters and numbers are necessary. Familiarity with databases desired. The participant should be able to work well independently.
  • The applicant must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident (“green-card-holder”). Prior to starting this position, a government security background clearance will be required.

WORK SETTING
Physical/Natural: SEAC is in Tallahassee, Florida which is located in the Red Hills Region within an hour’s drive of the Gulf of Mexico. Elevation varies from sea level to 200 feet. Summer temperatures can reach into the 90’s F, with high humidity. Summer thunderstorms are common. Work Environment: All work will be conducted at SEAC in a lab setting. All lab and office space is air conditioned. Some work will be conducted by hand, such as numbering shells and bones, so any need for gloves or other PPE will be provided if required.

VEHICLE AND DRIVERS LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • A personal vehicle is REQUIRED for this position.
  • Park housing is NOT available. The intern will be responsible for finding housing in the nearby area.

As SEAC is in a college town there are numerous apartments and rental properties available at reasonable rates. Tallahassee is one of the least expensive rental markets in the country.
