POSITION OVERVIEW

Position title: Human Dimensions of Climate Change Data Scientists

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: Start date is negotiable, but ideally no later than February 15, 2023

Position duration: Appointment for 1 year from start date, with possibility for additional year(s) of employment contingent upon performance and funding.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Environmental Markets Lab (emLab) is seeking up to two highly motivated Associate Specialists to conduct research and analyses on a variety of projects investigating the global impacts of climate change on human wellbeing. The research projects include, but are not limited to, estimating the global mental health burden of current climate changes, predicting the effects of future warming on malaria incidence in sub-Saharan Africa, identifying water scarcity “hotspots” in climate-stressed agricultural regions, and deriving actionable estimates of the equity implications of climate change at community scale. All projects are data-driven and many involve using and/or generating remotely sensed measures of social and/or environmental metrics. The Associate Specialists will be responsible for a variety of tasks including preparing, processing, synthesizing, and visualizing spatial, administrative, and remotely sensed data; conducting statistical, econometric, and machine learning analyses on large datasets; contributing to the drafting of academic manuscripts and presentations; and developing efficient and reproducible workflows to implement best practices for data acquisition and analysis.

emLab is an interdisciplinary team of scientists based at UC Santa Barbara that conducts cutting-edge, data-driven research on the power, limitations, and design of market-based approaches to tackle the world's most pressing environmental problems. In collaboration with implementing partners, emLab aims to better align environmental objectives and economic incentives in support of sustainable livelihoods and a resilient planet.

The successful candidates will have strong quantitative skills, an ability to work and problem solve independently, a creative and solutions-oriented mindset, and the ability to effectively communicate scientific results to stakeholders, scientists, and policymakers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

Bachelor's degree in computer science, economics, environmental science and management, data science, statistics, or a related field at the time of application.

Additional qualifications (required at time of start)

• At least 5 years of professional experience providing analytical research support to projects related to environmental science and management, data science, economics, or a related field;

OR

• A Master's degree in computer science, economics, environmental science and management, data science, statistics, or a related field at the time of appointment.

Preferred qualifications

• Excellent quantitative skills including experience collecting, managing, processing, and analyzing large datasets, including spatial data, satellite imagery, and other remotely sensed products;
• Proficiency with coding languages such as R and/or Python and experience working with GitHub;
• Experience using cloud computing resources and/or high performance computing clusters;
• Familiarity with the application of machine learning methods to remotely sensed data;
• Ability to synthesize and communicate scientific methods and results to a variety of partners and stakeholders;
• Excellent creative problem solving and troubleshooting skills;
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
• Ability to take initiative, self manage, and work independently as well as collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team;
• Exceptional attention to detail and strong organizational and time management skills.
