Employee Recreation Coordinator - Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park sees over 3 million annual visitors and encompasses just over 1 million acres of largely wilderness area and is known for its seemingly endless acres of rugged and breathtaking landscapes. Glacier National Park was established in 1910 and stands today as a monument to wild natural places. As part of the Crown of the Continent ecosystem, the park includes 175 named mountains, 762 lakes (131 named lakes), 200+ named waterfalls and 26 named glaciers, as well as 1,000 plant species, and hundreds of animal species. Employees can explore the park’s 745 miles of hiking trails, take a bus tour on Going-to-the-Sun Road, or kayak in clear lakes.
 
The Details:
  • Seasonal position starts in March and extends through mid-September 2023
  • Pay Rate: $17.20/hour
  • Schedule Varies: Average 40 hours/week

Responsibilities

Plan and coordinate day-to-day activities for employees:
  • Assisting location management: Helping with the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of Parkwide and location planned recreational activities.
  • Leading trips and activities: Planning and prepping before all activities to ensure that all details relevant to the successful operation of the activity have been considered.
  • Enforcing all applicable policies and rules throughout the activity to ensure safety and enjoyment for all participants.
  • Adhere to all Xanterra safety, risk, and environmental policies.
  • Safely operating a motor vehicle and complying with all company motor vehicle use policies.
  • Safely transporting up to a maximum of 15 passengers, in a 15-passenger van for potentially long periods of time.
  • Publicizing and promoting staff recreation activities: Posting flyers, making announcements, ensuring all employees are aware of the opportunity to participate.
  • Office Operation: Assisting employees with questions, completing, and recording transactions, collecting, and accounting for any/all fees remitted, issuing, and inspecting rental equipment, promptly and accurately completing any necessary reports.
  • Communicating daily with Parkwide Management, location management, HR, and employees.
  • Facilities and equipment supervision: Cleaning, inspecting and maintaining recreation facilities, equipment, and supplies to ensure safety and proper operation.
  • Adhering to all Recreation Program procedures, philosophies, and goals.
  • Work outdoors, sometimes under inclement weather conditions.
  • Guiding hikes of moderate distances in the outdoors, up and downhill, in various weather conditions. This may include backcountry hikes of up to 10 miles at a speed of no less than 2 miles per hour at altitudes of 5,000 feet to 10,000 feet.
  • Prepare a monthly activity calendar; following approval from the HR Director, the distribution, and posting of the calendar in all employee designated areas.
  • Other duties as assigned.
  • Potentially necessary to work holidays, weekends, and after regular office hours.

Qualifications

Essential Skills and Knowledge:
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral.
  • Strong organization skills.
  • At least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license and a clear driving record.
  • Must pass a DOT medical exam for commercial driver fitness determination.
  • Proficient computer skills (including Microsoft Windows programs: Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Knowledge of organizing and implementing programs.
  • Flexibility with working conditions, schedules, and facilities.
  • Willingness and ability to learn about Glacier National Parks natural environment and share this knowledge.
  • People oriented, always providing excellent customer service.
