Girls In Science Summer Camp Internship with state of NC

The Girls in Science Summer Camp Intern will serve on the leadership team for planning and hosting one week of residential summer camp located at Blue Jay Point County Park and one week of Girls in Science day camp, located at Walnut Creek Wetland Park. The Girls in Science mission is to engage girls in hands-on science experiences, connect participants to inspiring women in science from an intentional diversity of backgrounds, and create a safe atmosphere where diversity can be celebrated and students’ natural curiosity can flourish.

These camps are open to all NC middle school girls and nonbinary students who are interested in exploring science and nature topics. Walnut Creek camp is specifically targeted to local and/or high-needs students in the Southeast Raleigh community, and both camps host students from all socioeconomic backgrounds through our robust scholarship program.

The intern will take an active role in organizing, preparing for, and co-leading activities for these two camps, as well as assisting with cleanup and evaluation following both programs. Residential camp will involve living onsite with up to 16 students, staff, and volunteers for a full week of intensive, immersive programming; day camp will have one overnight camping component. As time allows, the intern will assist with other Museum programs, including the summer Junior Interpreter program. The intern will also have opportunities to explore areas of personal interest within the Museum, learn about natural sciences, network with staff, and teach experientially with objects, live animals, and specimens.

Major Task to be Performed: Participate as a co-leader for the residential summer camp program, including activity development, planning, and implementation of camp. Help prepare participant information materials, activity planning, and scheduling of activities. Maintain an active list of participants and the status of their applications. Assemble instructor notebook, collection of waivers and forms, organize camp supplies, and develop activities for camp. Assist with Girls in Science day camp at Walnut Creek Wetland Center by organizing materials and co-leading some activities, including one overnight camping component. Intern will lead activities in keeping with their own interests, knowledge and comfort level, while being actively encouraged to push their own boundaries, learn, and grow throughout this experience.

Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: Interns will gain experience leading groups of children from diverse racial, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds while teaching numerous natural science topics. Intern will co-develop and co-lead an extensive natural science curriculum. Interns will provide a positive experience for campers as they teach experientially with live animals, objects, and specimens.
