Summer Camp Internship with the state of NC

Summer Camps offer a fun, informal opportunity to learn through hands-on activities, program development, field trips, games, and crafts while learning to work with a variety of ages and diverse backgrounds. Our interns will assist kindergarten through twelfth grade students as they explore a variety of topics using live animals, natural science objects and props in an indoor and outdoor settings.

Major Task to be Performed: 
While the internship is based at the Museum, interns may be asked to assist at other outdoor camp locations. Half of the internship will be spent as an Assistant Instructor within a camp assisting the Instructor with designing/teaching programs and care of our campers. Bi-weekly, the intern will assist the Administration Staff to understand how a camp program is operated by ensuring smooth transitions during drop-off/pick-up, taking animal training and help staff communicate with children, parents, and Museum staff.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
Interest in sharing nature with children; ability to communicate effectively with people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds; coursework or experience in education and/or biology helpful but not required.

Final Product or Outcome Anticipated: 
Interns will learn how to provide a positive experience for campers as they develop skills in informal education, curriculum-based education content, communication, office administration, while helping to run a fast-pasted children’s program.

Internship Period:
Monday, May 22 - Friday, July 28, 2022

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
  • An applicant must be a permanent North Carolina resident attending a college, university, law school, community college or technical institute in North Carolina or a North Carolina resident attending an equivalent institution out of state. 
  • Applicants must carry a 2.5 or greater overall grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
  • Applicant must be at least 18 years old by January 1, 2023.
  • Applicants must be continuing their education in the fall following their participation in the program.
  • To qualify for a law internship, applicants must have completed at least one year of law school before the beginning of the internship, unless other majors are listed.
  • Students having previously held paid internships with this program are not eligible to apply.
  • Applicants must be willing and able to work full-time for the entire 10-week internship. Applicants must be able to provide legal proof of identity and work authorization within three working days of employment.
