The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. This position will be in support of the Department of Microbiology.

Responsibilities

HJF is seeking a Research Assistant I or II to perform research and development in the laboratory of Dr. Chou-Zen Giam in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology of the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine. The Research Assistant will provide laboratory and technical support to senior technical and professional staff and solves problems of standard complexity by carrying out research projects in a laboratory environment.
 
Responsibilities
• Maintains compliance with established laboratory safety and other procedures.
• Ensures the proper disposal of infectious and hazardous materials.
• Applies quality control measures as outlined/required by the protocol. Provides basic data analysis.
• Performs laboratory research projects, including collection and organization of data, and maintaining databases. Makes detailed observations on experiments.
• Orders supplies, chemicals and reagents and maintains lab inventory.
• Assists in the preparation of reports, publications, and presentations.
• Follows instructions and standard operating procedures to perform expected tasks. May provide basic instruction to other lab staff.
• May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
 
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
• A B.S or M.S. degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, cancer biology, or microbiology is required.
• Knowledge of standard laboratory techniques and ability to follow general instructions.
• Independence, creativity, communication, analytical and writing skills and a strong academic record will be a plus.
. Experiences with recombinant DNA techniques, protein purification, DNA transfection, lentivirus and adenovirus vectors, CRISPR-Cas9, mammalian cell culture, T/B cell biology, reporter assays, and RT-PCR are highly desirable.
 
Physical Capabilities 
 
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 10 lbs.
  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials over 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.
Education and Experience
 
Research Assistant I 
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 3-5 years experience required
Research Assistant II
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Minimum of 0-2 years experience required
