Consulting Statistician - ESA Compliance Analyst - (1019)

Western EcoSystems Technology, Inc. (WEST), a dynamic medium size, employee owned consulting firm with offices across the United States, has an exciting and immediate opportunity for a Consulting Statistician (full-time, regular) with interest in working on problems related to Endangered Species Act (ESA) compliance and the study of threatened and endangered species. Since 1990, WEST has grown to be one of the premier environmental and statistical consulting firms in the United States. WEST has a permanent core of professionals with broad experience in basic and applied ecological studies and the sophisticated analysis of natural resource data.

The minimum base salary for the consulting position is $70,000-$85,000 DOE, plus annual bonus. Salary may vary based on education, knowledge and experience.
 
Job Summary:
The successful candidate must be a self-starter who enjoys research, learning new analytical techniques to solve challenging problems, and communicating and interacting with people (both co-workers and clients). Additionally, the successful candidate should provide technical solutions and advise co-workers and clients on complex statistical analyses. Previous experience studying federally and/or state protected species, as well as direct experience working on habitat conservation plans (HCP) or biological assessments (BA) will be considered favorably.
 
Responsibilities include:
  • Develop and apply statistical methods, program analyses primarily in R, and interpret and present results at meetings and in reports for clients and manuscripts for publication.
  • Participate in developing project budgets and proposals.
  • Provide critical review of analyses and reports and advise other statisticians on various projects.
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with coworkers, clients, and stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • PhD in statistics, 
  • 2 or more years of experience as an applied statistician in ecology, fisheries, or wildlife research,
  • Relevant experience in statistical consulting,
  • Proficient in statistical programming and advanced data manipulation in R,,
  • Experience with some or all of the follow analysis methods: generalized linear modeling, bootstrapping and simulation, spatial analysis, Bayesian hierarchical modeling, and survival analysis,
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under time constraints and meet deliverable targets and deadlines,
  • Ability to write proposals, manage deadlines, and collaborate with others,
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills,
  • Experience with relational database systems and data manipulation,
  • Experience with data management and geographical information systems (ArcGIS, QGIS, etc.),
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft Office applications, including MS Access.
