Senior Patient Support Specialist
The Disability Office is the centralized location for the processing of FMLA and commercial disability paperwork for patients and families. As a part of the Department of Patient Support Services, the office serves as the liaison to patients’ medical team to ensure timely completion of requests for leave during treatment.

Position Highlights:
  • The Patient Support Specialist serves as an organizational expert for patients and families, as well as faculty and staff, for the policies related to and completion of commercial disability and FMLA claims.
  • This position also serves as the departmental liaison for faculty, staff, patients, and families for the resolution of concerns related to the job functions of the Patient Support Specialist
  • This position oversees and ensures timely completion of patients’ disability claims to facilitate maintenance of employment, income, and insurance while receiving treatment.

The Ideal Candidate:
  • Minimum of three (3) years experience working in a hospital or physician practice setting with focus on financial eligibility processes, insurance claims processing and/or community resource referrals.
  • Knowledge of commercial disability programs and processes, and FMLA laws and policies.
  • Knowledge of confidentiality and privacy laws as related to protected health information.

Responsibilities:
  • The Patient Support Specialist processes applications for financial assistance through the departmental Patient Support Fund to assist eligible patients with expenses related to receiving care at the Cancer Center.
  • Oversees the various philanthropic funds accessed by the department for patient expenses related to care; determines eligibility for and tracks usage and distribution of funds, and acts as a liaison with grant officers in the Moffitt Foundation and philanthropic organizations for reporting and trouble-shooting purposes.
  • Maintains databases, documents eligibility for programs, distributes funds for compliance and accounting purposes, and prepares statistical reports monthly.

Credentials and Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social/Behavioral, Healthcare, Business or related field and a minimum of four (4) years’ experience working in a hospital, physician practice or another healthcare setting with a social/behavioral, business or insurance-related focus is required.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology needed to accurately review medical record, complete claims and assess for eligibility for funding programs, and demonstrated experience with electronic medical records.
  • Computer proficiency using multiple databases, with special emphasis on Microsoft Excel.
  • Superior problem-solving, communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills to identify and resolve complex claims discrepancies between patient, insurance companies, employers and Moffitt physicians.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply financial policies, and use sound, independent decision-making when determining eligibility for departmental financial assistance programs and philanthropic fund programs.
  • Ability to promptly and efficiently react to shifting priorities, demands and timelines using analytical and problem-solving capabilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work professionally and collaboratively with Moffitt physicians, staff, patients and external entities such as insurance companies and employers.
  • Ability to effectively serve as mentor and trainer to new staff.
  • Ability to oversee daily operations and assignment of work to ensure all job functions are completed timely and accurately.
