INFORMATION SERVICES SPECIALIST, SENIOR

As a Senior Information Services Specialist with the Libraries Department, you may have the opportunity to fill a variety of different roles. You may oversee, supervise, assign & prioritize work, and manage performance of the staff assigned to any of the following areas/functions: -Passport Acceptance Facility -Circulation Department -Library Assistant Department. The Senior Information Services Specialist position is responsible for oversight of the Library Programs offered within the library branch. Their programs provide convenient, and individualized services to library customers through instruction, training, and outreach.
 
You will work directly with the Community Outreach Coordinator to research, schedule, plan, organize, and develop programs & materials, and present instructional programs for adult populations. You will serve as the lead worker for instructing and assisting patrons with the computer lab, online library catalog, electronic resources and other inquiries. You may assist with complex local history and genealogical research and work in preservation and archival functions. This position develops and delivers adult programming and outreach for the library branch; assists adults with researching or locating information; City of Newport News 700 Town Center Drive Suite 200 Newport News VA 23606 Phone: 757-926-1800 Fax: 757-926-1825 develops adult reading lists and research aides; plans and delivers outreach programs for the adult population.
 
The Senior Library Programming Specialist position offers competitive salary of $39K - $67K based on education and experience.
 
Your knowledge in Library Sciences, customer service, computer skills, communication and time management will develop daily! You will learn the needs of and how to best assist the local community as well.
 
The Senior Library Programming Specialist requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Liberal Arts or Sciences, or related field, 3-5 years related experience to include 1-2 years of lead experience.
 
An acceptable background check to include a local and state criminal history check and an acceptable sex offender registry check will also be required.
 
The City of Newport News has three public library locations which include the Main Street Library, the Pearl Bailey Library, and the Virgil I. Grissom Library. These libraries are open 10 am – 9 pm Monday through Thursday; 10 am – 6 pm on Fridays & Saturdays and 1 pm – 5 pm on Sundays. Availability on evenings, Saturdays and Sundays is required for this position. Special events occur around the local area and there are opportunities for outreach within the community during these events.
