Operations Research Management Trainee 2023

MT Program: 
The Management Trainee Program is a non-rotational program that develops leaders who will drive the future of our organization. It’s a paid, full-time program for recent graduates with less than four years of professional work experience. Upon arrival at BNSF, Management Trainees receive an overview of our railroad and industry during orientation at our Fort Worth, Texas headquarters. Once the one-week orientation is complete, Management Trainees move into their assigned departments for on-the-job training, if in corporate departments (Accounting/Finance, Corporate Audit, Human Resources, Marketing, Sourcing, or Technology Services). If in an operations department (Engineering, Mechanical, or Transportation), following orientation, you will spend time at our Technical Training Center in Overland Park, Kan., learning to lead a diverse workgroup to safely and efficiently accomplish work assignments and goals that are in line with the company's vision.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operations Research Management Trainees who work in the BNSF Operations Research group may have duties that include, but is not limited to, the following:
  1. Work with key stakeholders and subject matter experts to understand business problems and consider solution approaches
  2. Data manipulation and analysis
  3. Design, develop, test, and implement OR models and decision-support tools
  4. Share insights and results with key stakeholders
  5. Support and enhance existing optimization models and applications

WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Primarily an office environment with some field activities.
  • Normal office hours, Monday through Friday, with weekend or evening work as required.
 
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENT
  • Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
 
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's or Graduate degree from an accredited university to be completed before hiring OR have obtained a degree within the past four (4) years.
  • Degree needs to be in Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Industrial Engineering, or Computer Science OR another Technical/Engineering related degree.
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.50 or higher with a degree in Engineering or Construction Management OR a 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA with a non-Engineering degree. 
  • Less than four (4) years of work experience in a professional work environment, excluding internships or positions held in high school or college. 
  • Authorization to work in the US without Company sponsorship now AND in the future.
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Familiarity with optimization software – e.g. CPLEX, FICO and Gurobi
  • Aptitude for computer programming – e.g., C, C++, VBA, SAS, Java, Python, or another object-oriented programming language
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office – e.g., Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint
 
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong drive for results as well as superior communications and teamwork skills to be able to gather information to identify and resolve problems.
  • Cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above.
  • Ability in any of the following is preferred: applications development, project management, mobile device development methodologies, database design, mathematical modeling, data mining, data management, data warehouse concepts, network planning and engineering, and voice/video systems.
  • Experience with one or more of the following programming languages and tools such as Java, C/C++, Net(C#), ABAP, Python, SQL, GitHub, and/or HTML5.
