HMRI Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship 2023

HMRI has a long history of hosting the HMRI Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) program, providing undergraduate students with an educational, hands-on experience in biomedical laboratory research. Current undergraduate, aspiring scientists will conduct hands-on laboratory research alongside HMRI scientists and be mentored by HMRI research faculty. The HMRI SURF program offers a variety of opportunities in neuroscience, cardiovascular, and neurovascular science research, some of which include Alzheimer's disease, migraine, vaping and e-cigarettes cardiac toxicity, and cardiovascular signaling laboratory-based research.

No prior laboratory research experience is required. Each student receives laboratory safety training, laboratory research techniques training, is assigned to conduct a laboratory research project under the mentorship of one of HMRI's research faculty, and receives a stipend upon completion of the program. HMRI's SURF program also includes academic and professional enrichment workshops/seminars. At the end of the HMRI SURF program, students give a presentation outlining their experience and research findings.

HMRI SURF program participants can choose either an 8-week option (meeting weekdays, 9 AM – 5 PM, June 12, 2023 through August 4, 2023) or a 10-week option (meeting weekdays, 9 AM – 5 PM, June 12, 2023 through August 18, 2023).
The program start date is flexible. If your academic quarter or semester final exams are during the week of June 12th - June 16th, 2023, then you can start the program the following week of June 19th.

All students who are accepted and participate in the SURF program will receive a stipend ($4,800 for the 8-week option or $6,000 for the 10-week option) upon completion of the program.

Applicants do not need to be majoring in science. We encourage students with general biology and/or general chemistry knowledge and an interest in learning and conducting biomedical laboratory research to apply.
