Legal Department - Immigration (IMM) Team Internship (MD Office)

Title: Legal Internship – Immigration Team (IMM)
 
Internship Description: Legal-Immigration interns will be working directly with clients of various backgrounds, carrying active caseloads of preparing filings for US Citizenship and Immigration Services and the Immigration Court under the supervision of experienced attorneys and BIA Accredited Representatives. Cases may also involve assisting attorneys in preparing custody, guardianship, or adoption filings in state courts for Special Immigrant Juvenile Status applications. Interns may also work with Ayuda’s Project END, a project aimed at preventing and remedying the harm caused by immigration legal services fraud through advice, counsel, and representation of victims. Project END also occasionally represents victims of consumer scams that target non-citizens.
 
The Spring internship lasts from mid-January 2023 through late April 2023. We have 2 intern spots available within our Legal Department – Immigration Team for our Spring 2023 cohort across our three offices. Specific office capacity is as follows.

Department/Individuals Assisting: Ayuda’s Legal Department – Immigration Team
 
Responsible to: Interns will be assigned to an Ayuda attorney who will serve as their primary supervisor over the course of their internship
 
Responsibilities:
  • Drafting client communication
  • Conducting relevant legal and background research
  • Translating of legal and background documents
  • Drafting personal statements
  • Preparing immigration forms
  • Writing memos and briefs
  • Drafting court motions and orders
  • Advocacy with law enforcement and other agencies
  • Attending USCIS interviews with clients as an interpreter
  • Filing consumer complaints for victims of fraud
  • Assisting with civil litigation against businesses or individuals engaged in fraud targeting non-citizens

Commitment: We are looking for Spring Interns who can dedicate at least 16 - 24 hours per week for 12-14 weeks to provide administrative and programmatic support. The internship would begin mid-to-late January and wrap up by the end of April. The exact start and end dates are flexible. Interns generally work at least two days per week with at least a few days in office needed monthly.
 
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship perfect for undergraduate, graduate, and law students looking to gain professional work experience in a very supportive environment committed to having a positive impact. We will work with your institution or university to ensure that you are able to receive academic credit for the internship if applicable.
 
Technology Needed: We will provide the intern with a laptop, and they will need to have access to reliable internet connection on remote days for video conferences and email communication.
