The State Corporation Commission’s (SCC) Bureau of Insurance (BOI) looks to fill three paid ($20/hour) summer internships to assist in the Bureau’s Life & Health division, which regulates life and health insurance companies in Virginia. Internships are available in the Market Conduct Section, Health Rates Section, and the Plan Management and Affordable Care Act (ACA) Forms Section of the Life & Health Division, as outlined below. All positions will expose selected interns to the work of insurance compliance and examination.

The SCC is a state agency located in downtown Richmond, Virginia. The SCC has regulatory authority over many business and economic interests in Virginia. The SCC strives to create a balanced playing field not only for consumers, but for companies as well. The Bureau of Insurance regulates insurance companies, premium finance companies, public adjusters, agencies, and agents in Virginia to provide citizens with access to reliable insurance protection and ensure that insurers are financially sound. Internship Job Descriptions:
The Market Conduct intern will:
  • Assist and participate in team examinations of the market practices of life and health insurance companies and gain exposure in the review of company records and procedures to determine compliance
  • Assist in the analysis of Virginia’s life and health insurance market to identify insurers that may not be operating in compliance with applicable statutes and regulations
  • Assist staff with organizing and putting together training exercises, materials, presentations, etc. for the market conduct section.
  • Assist the Market Conduct section with organizing and purging organization documents on the agency’s internal website using SharePoint.

The Plan Management and Affordable Care Act (ACA) Intern will:
  • Assist with performing initial reviews of ACA Form filings, making sure essential items are included
  • Read and review insurance policies and related forms
  • Review form numbers in the ACA Form filings to ensure correct forms are attached and form number match attached forms.
  • Assist with review and organization of training materials and form review checklists
 
The Rates Intern will:
  • Assist in the review accident and sickness insurance rate submissions to ensure compliance with the Virginia Insurance and Administrative Codes
  • Perform initial screening on newly submitted rate filings.
  • Review, critique, organize, and proof guides for clarity and practical application from a new employee's perspective.
  • Assist in the preparation and use of data analysis tools.     
 
Preferred Qualifications
  • Continuing student at an accredited college or university in pursuit of a bachelor’s or master’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, or related degree
  • Coursework in insurance or risk management is a plus
  • Anticipated graduation dates between December 2023 - May 2024 are preferred, but not required
  • Ability to work 40 hours per week in a hybrid environment from May through August 2023
  • Ability to perform basic analysis of numbers and data is desired
  • Ability to thrive in a team-oriented environment
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Natural inquisitiveness
  • Exceptional reliability
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, SharePoint, and database software
  • Ideal candidates will be interested in a future career insurance examination, compliance investigation, and public service.

We anticipate that this internship will be primarily hybrid with the opportunity for some telework and some work in our downtown Richmond office. We will continue to evaluate our telework policies moving forward as things evolve.

Contingent on business needs at the completion of the summer internship, the division may offer part-time work hours during the semester to continuing students or offer a full-time permanent position following the intern’s graduation.
