Youth Services Program Intern Opportunity - Catholic Charities Diocese of Arlington Migration Services

APPROPRIATE EXPERIENCE FOR ACADEMIC BACKGROUNDS:

Behavioral and Family Studies, International Affairs, Community Planning and Engagement, Political Science, International Development.

The Mentoring Youth in Virginia Program (MYVA) pairs volunteers with one of our clients to work more intensively and build personal relationships. It addresses the youth's social, community, educational, and vocational goals. Work one on one with refugees ages 15-25 on their dreams! You will transform a young person's life and build lasting relationships.

Duties will include:

·       Develop an understanding of common barriers that newcomer youth and families face during their adjustment period while trying to accomplish long-term goals.
·       Plan and conduct community outreach initiatives to create an asset map identifying prospective local and state program partners
·       Practice interpersonal skills through community outreach and group meetings.
·       Understand how MRS coordinates with internal and external programs to holistically support newcomers in the Northern Virginia community by taking a strengths-based approach to service provision.

DUTIES: In cooperation with and as directed by MRS Staff:
·       Participate in bi-weekly VRSAP/MYVA meetings and Arlington MRS team meetings.
·       Through outreach with local and state organizations, identify opportunities for collaboration between the MRS youth program and other service providers.
·       Research, create, and implement a digital communication strategy geared towards providing clients in the MYVA program with regular updates on relevant educational and career opportunities in their area.
·       Collect feedback from youth program participants (youth and families) on their overall experience, including highlights and growth areas.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Rising Junior or Senior
  • Open to working in a multicultural environment; good interpersonal communication skills
  • Flexible and adaptable regarding the change in routines and duties
  • Research capability and ability to utilize data to promote our programs
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Dari, Farsi, Pashto, or Urdu is a plus but not required.
 
TIME COMMITMENT:
  • Dependent on internship requirements
  • One day per week in-office, 4-6 hours
  • Two days per week, in-office or remote, 2-3 hours per day
 
EXPECTATIONS:
  • Be reliable and punctual
  • Act professionally and ethically in all interactions with agency staff and clients
  • Access to reliable transportation and a driver’s license
