Civil Engineer Trainee

Location: Shawnee National Forest
Harrisburg, IL

Position Description:
This is a wonderful opportunity for a recent graduate or a young adult looking to get real hands-on experience working on federal land. Get to know the Shawnee National Forest and all Southern Illinois has to offer while assisting the Forest Engineer with gathering information for multiple projects on the Forest. These projects will include work on a variety of facilities such as buildings, dams and bridges, as well as roads and trails. Projects will include some design work as well as project inspection, with some time devoted to material research. Time will be spent in the field and on specific project locations, as well as in the office.

Duties:
  • Conduct traverse surveys and field measurements – sometimes in rough, uneven terrain
  • Collect data for road and facility construction, maintenance, and monitoring
  • Make design calculations and prepare specifications for portions of projects for roads, trails, water and wastewater facilities, buildings, bridges, culverts and other engineering facilities
  • Prepare maps and drawings
  • Assist with construction inspections for adherence to approved plans and specifications
  • Enter and manage data in Forest Service databases
  • Support and learn about other Forest Service programs, such as recreation, timber, fire, and survey

Qualifications:
  • Must be a U.S Citizen or National
  • Engineering degree – civil, structural, or geotechnical preferred. 
  • Demonstrated ability to compile, manage, and report on multifaceted data. 
  • Knowledge of basic professional civil engineering concepts and standard practices.
  • Ability to read maps and navigate via map and compass; GIS/GPS experience a plus.

*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed.
