Project Associate, Political and Security Affairs
The National Bureau of Asian Research (NBR) is seeking a Political and Security Affairs (PSA) Project Associate to support various NBR projects, such as the PLA Executive Education Course, China's Military Modernization, and projects related to specific countries or subregions such as Taiwan, Australia, and the Korean Peninsula. This opportunity allows the individual to strengthen skills in research, event planning, publications, and general office and project support, as well as be exposed to budgeting, fundraising, and business development practices, through on-the-job experience. This is a full-time, special assignment (temporary, one-year) position, January - December 2022. The Project Associate, Political and Security Affairs reports to the Senior Project Manager and Project Manager, Political and Security Affairs.
Responsibilities
Project associates work on project teams to assist project directors and project managers in accomplishing specific project objectives. Project associates may take the lead on managing specific project tasks.

  • Project Assistance: providing substantive support for project implementation by drafting and proof-reading project descriptions, concept papers, correspondence, etc.; helping to maintain project documentation, web-pages, and filing systems.
  • Research Support and Writing: providing substantive research assistance for project teams and scholars; undertaking literature reviews; summarizing research papers; providing market research, writing talking points, and other materials as needed.
  • Development Support: helping to identify potential funding streams and providing support in proposal research and drafting.
  • Budget Support: assisting with building budgets for proposals and providing support to manage existing budgets.
  • Publications Support: reviewing, fact-checking, proof-reading, formatting, and copyediting publications; assisting with publications distribution (including mailings).
  • Database Administration: maintaining and updating project databases; data entry and research for institutional and project databases.
  • Event Planning: assisting with event concepts, providing administrative support for conferences, workshops, presentations, and briefings (drafting agendas; coordinating invitations, assisting with travel, accommodation, and venue arrangements; note-taking, etc.).
  • Phone Support: along with NBR interns and other project associates, helping to answer incoming calls to the organization and handling them appropriately.
  • Participating in and supporting other NBR activities as needed.

Qualifications
Project associates have substantive expertise on a range of countries and issues (substantive knowledge and/or language skills) and must be able to understand each project's scope/relevance in order to work effectively with scholars and other stakeholders.

  • Degree holder preferably in Asia Studies, International Relations, Political Science, or a related field
  • Professional experience with research, writing, editing, event planning, or other responsibilities listed above preferred
  • Excellent written, oral, and research skills
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a relevant geographical or topical area of Asia studies and/or U.S.-Asia policy; reading proficiency in an Asian language, Mandarin preferred
