Help process all tagged salmon specimens – up to 100,000 from fisheries, spawning ground recoveries, and hatchery returns in Washington Waters!

With that in mind, 
With your experience you will collect and organize data from all Washington fisheries that others will use to manage upcoming fishing seasons.

The optimal applicant has previous experience with Coded Wire Tag (CWT) extractions and readings

Our Scientific Technician 2, 
  • Performs coring and dissecting specimens - organizes samples by fishery. 
  • Maintains an organized laboratory space, keeping tools and equipment in the same location so that all employees can find them. 
  • Reads and transcribes data onto appropriate forms. 
  • Interprets/deciphers and organizedata using a microscope to view data on tags.
  • Transcribes error-free data. 
  • Records data into databases
  • Enters data into the correct recovery year, fishery, and assigned batch number. 
  • Enters alpha and numeric characters accurately. 

WORKING CONDITIONS: 
Work Setting, including hazards:  
  • Work is performed in a laboratory setting. Work requires manual dexterity and mobility, the ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines, and accommodate numerous interruptions while performing tasks.
  • Odor in the lab can be unpleasant, tissue samples are bloody, work includes frequently lifting equipment, snout bags, and garage cans weighing between 15-60 pounds with assistance.
Schedule:  
  • Typically, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Travel Requirements: 
  • May travel to various hatchery locations throughout the state.
Tools and Equipment: 
  • Coring machine or handheld corer, scalpels, knives – various assortment, V-Detector/wand, cutting boards, magnet, air compressor, platform truck, microscope, and PC.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science, AND two (2) years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one (1) year of high school science, AND two (2) years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field may substitute, year for year, for experience. 

Certifications/Licenses:
  • Valid State Driver’s License

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Experience with Coded Wire Tag (CWT) extraction and reading.
