Nurse Resident - Inpatient Nursing (150213)

Children's Hospital of Philadelphia is hiring for new grad RNs to join their talented team of clinicians, who are dedicated to making breakthroughs that improve the lives of children.
 
This posting is an application for positions in inpatient units including:  medical/surgical, emergency, intraoperative, intensive care units, and rotational unit positions through the Nursing Operations department. Positions may be full-time or part-time.   Application is open to new to practice, currently licensed Registered Nurses in the Commonwealth of PA, as well as nurses with less than 12 months of RN work experience. Applicants without an active license should apply to the Nurse Resident--Pending Licensure position. This requisition will fill multiple positions. For additional information:  http://CHOP Nurse Residency Program
 
Job Responsibilities:
Clinical Practice
  • Follows the nursing process to deliver safe, compassionate, and culturally effective care.
  • Assesses patients accurately, comprehends findings, and communicates patient condition to all team members.
  • Learns to recognize clinical changes that are indicative of patient deterioration; understands the role of the CAT team and how to access this resource.
  • Learns to collaborate with the patient, family, and multidisciplinary team to coordinate all facets of care.
  • Initiates, implements and/or revises the patient’s plan of care on admission and during the course of the hospitalization. Plans of care are outcomes focused and include goals as well as required interventions. Plans are developed in partnership with the patient, family, and the interdisciplinary care team. Seeks resources as needed to increase skills related to the patient plan of care.
  • Recognizes care should be coordinated across the continuum and develops an understanding of available case management resources.
  • Consistently follows evidence based practice bundles and nursing standards/procedures to provide nursing care that eliminates preventable events of patient harm and promotes excellent patient outcomes.
  • Learns to recognize and addresses situations which present ethical dilemmas and/or moral distress. Takes steps to actively address the situation. Seeks resources as needed to resolve the situation.
  • Incorporates patient/family education in planning care and begins to encourage patient/family self-advocacy.
  • Evaluates nursing care and patient response and communicates findings to team members through documentation in the EHR.
  • Accountable for the rapid adoption and implementation of clinical practice changes into own practice.
 
Communication
  • Understands and documents the evaluation of nursing interventions and outcomes of nursing care utilizing hospital standards, policies and procedures.
  • Consistently follows safe hand-off practices as defined in patient care standards and procedures.
  • Demonstrates understanding and uses the safety behaviors for error prevention. Identifies potential safety concerns and communicates with unit leadership as appropriate. Enters safety nets when applicable, including good catch/near miss situations.
  • Learns to demonstrate effective verbal and nonverbal communication techniques and good listening skills to empathically communicate with patients/ families, and colleagues.
  • Begins to encourage patient/family self-advocacy.  
Collaboration
  • Demonstrates effective teamwork as a member of the interdisciplinary care team, fostering a culture of respect. Recognizes situations where disrespectful collaboration may impact patient care and/or create non-collaborative relationships. Seeks resources as needed to resolve situations involving incivility and/or disrespect. 
  • Actively participates in interdisciplinary patient care rounds and/or meetings. Advances skills to make recommendations to the plan of care that reflect nursing goals, interventions, and expected outcomes. Revises the plan of care according to the patient care decisions made on rounds.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of evidence based practice in direct clinical care in collaboration with other members of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Advances skills in developing and implementing effective partnerships with members of the ancillary staff; delegates tasks effectively to assure comprehensive nursing care is provided.
  • Learns to develop and sustain professional, well-boundaried, therapeutic relationships with patients and families in which all actions are in the best interest of the patient and family and there is no personal gain at the patient/families expense.

  • Maintains CEU’s for nursing licensure.
  • Maintains compliance with mandatory education and annual nursing competencies.

  • Reads articles pertinent to the patient population. Gains skills in performing literature reviews.

  • Begins to participate in activities that contribute to improving the health of the community.
 
Required Education: 
  • Nursing Diploma.
  • According to the CMS (Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services) a copy of diploma or transcript is required as proof of academic achievement for all non-laboratory personnel performing non-waived POC testing.
Required License/Certification:
  • RN license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
  • CPR Certification, issued through hands-on instructor lead psychomotor skills verification (AHA, Red Cross)
