Microbiology Technician I (night shift)

Job Title: Microbiology Technician I
Reports to: Microbiology Supervisor
Supervisory Responsibilities: None

FLSA Classification: Non-Exempt; Full-Time

Summary/Objective:
The Microbiology Technician I is responsible for performance and documentation of extraction methods and training of lab assistants.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Work with the microbiology supervisor to determine priority of samples, and perform the following:
  • Media preparation
  • Sample weighing, plating, and counting
  • Instrument setup
  • Cleaning and sanitizing throughout the Microbiology Laboratory
  • Maintain notebooks and other relevant documentation to GDP (Good Documentation Practices) standards
  • Basic troubleshooting and routine equipment maintenance.
  • Perform routine checks of instruments such as balances, refrigerators, and incubators
  • Receive and log in reagents, along with certificates of analysis and SDSs
  • Prepare reports and summarize large amounts of data using Excel, instrument software and LIMS.
  • Properly handle and dispose of laboratory hazardous waste.
  • Shared responsibility for inventory and restocking of supplies for general laboratory needs.
  • Seek opportunities to reduce routine laboratory costs by increased efficiency (higher throughput, decreased cost of supplies).
  • Execute projects as assigned to meet changing laboratory needs and requirements.
  • Shared responsibility for general laboratory organization and cleanliness.
  • Communication of relevant work details to Lab Supervisor and coworkers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Strong computer, scientific, and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication (oral and written) and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, self-motivation, adaptability, and a positive attitude
  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, keep accurate records, follow instructions, and comply with company policies

Education and Experience:
  • The successful candidate will have a minimum of a high school diploma (A.S. or B.S. in Biology preferred), and related science or experience working in a production laboratory. A preference will be towards candidates that have experience in a microbiology laboratory.
  • Good working knowledge of laboratory terminology, biology, bench work, equipment, materials, and the techniques/procedures commonly used in a production laboratory.
  • Knowledge of LIMS, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Authorization to work in the United States indefinitely without restriction or sponsorship

Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibility.

Work Environment
This job operates in a research lab. This role routinely uses standard lab equipment such as beakers, test tubes, flasks, thermometers and computers.

Physical Demands

The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position, and hours of work are generally Monday through Friday 1:00 PM to 10:00 PM, but may require night shift work on occasion to 11 PM or later.

Travel
Travel is not expected but may occasionally occur for educational/career development purposes.
