Summer Camp Counselor (Special Needs)

AHRC-New York City offers a unique opportunity at our summer camp programs. The camps provide a chance not only to work with individuals who have developmental disabilities but also to meet, socialize with, and work with people from many different countries. The facilities are a rare setting in which workers can make friends with people from around the world. Most staff are working towards careers in health care fields such as psychology, nursing, special education, social work, medicine and nursing.

Improving the quality of life to developmentally delayed individuals is our priority; the camps are able to provide experiences to people of all ages with developmental disabilities that would otherwise be unavailable. Working at the Isaacson Gordon Lodge involves working directly with individuals with a mild to moderate intellectual disability, while our Camp Anne program typically supports individuals on a 1:1 basis. Staff will help campers participate in art projects, therapeutic riding, swimming, boating, music, archery, nature and sports to achieve our goal in providing a rich summer experience for our individuals.

In addition, the camps offer a free six college credit course in developmental disabilities. The course is taught by leading professors from NYU, Brooklyn College, and Fordham. The college course provides an excellent balance of academic knowledge and experience. Those who decide to take the course will find that it not only enriches the summer experience, it also provides a rich store of knowledge that can be used in future work settings and in everyday life.
