Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Allot Behavior and Design Group in the Materials Sciences and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) who is a highly-motivated individual with expertise in the physical metallurgy of ferrous alloys.

The candidate is expected to join a research team that is focusing on advanced ferrous alloys for a wide variety of high temperature and ambient temperature applications. Mechanical, tribological, thermal, and oxidation properties and their co-optimization through alloy design and processing are specific areas of interest. Processing approaches of interest include casting, wrought and additive manufacturing. The initial focus of the position will be primarily aimed towards the application and development of advanced alloys and processing pathways for automotive applications.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Understand the processing-microstructure-property relationships in various ferrous alloy systems
  • Identify and perform the necessary chemistry and processing modifications to meet target alloy properties for various manufacturing routes
  • Apply advanced characterization and modeling techniques and make fundamental contributions to the field
  • Interact with other researchers, technicians and students to drive the research agenda
  • Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer-reviewed journals in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements
