Senior Teaching and Learning Specialist

RTI's International Education (IE) Division supports education development around the world by strengthening education policy, management, and practice in order to achieve measurable improvement in teaching and learning. From our well-established reputation in education systems strengthening, to proven work in early grade learning, RTI is improving education quality, relevance and efficiency through implementation of projects funded by USAID, LEGO Foundation, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and other donors and clients.
 
RTI is seeking to fill a Teaching & Learning Specialist position to support RTI’s portfolio of education programming and business development efforts in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). This position will focus on teacher professional development, both in-service and pre-service, and contributing to education proposals and projects more broadly.
 
The Teaching & Learning Specialist will contribute to IE growth by engaging in new business development, such as leading, writing, and contributing to proposals and scoping/capture for new business opportunities. This Specialist will be responsible for providing a range of technical assistance in support of RTI’s field-based projects and may also serve as a manager for projects and other activities.
 
This position will require close collaboration within RTI’s IE Division and across RTI’s International Development Group (IDG) and may be based in Research Triangle Park, NC (RTI headquarters), Washington, DC or remotely.  It will report to the Senior Director, Teaching & Learning and will require international travel (up to 20%).
 
Role and Responsibilities:
  • Contribute to business development activities in support of the broader IE Division, specifically leading, writing, and contributing to technical proposals as well as planning and carrying out scoping/capture work, partner identification and development, and other related tasks (50% time anticipated).
  • Serve as a technical specialist, supporting the development of approaches and materials that enhance teacher professional development (TPD), with a particular focus on pre-service approaches and systems, including teacher training, teacher coaching and mentoring, and school-based teacher communities of practice and other forms of peer-support.
  • Provide a range of other technical assistance, involving instructional design, materials development and production, gender-based and inclusive education programming, and/or policy and systems strengthening related to teacher education and management.
  • As assigned, manage projects, task orders, and/or activities within projects; oversee desk/field research and pilot activities; and/or contribute to sector assessments and program evaluations.
  • Contribute to education sector assessments and evaluations and, as appropriate, serve as principal investigator on research activities.
  • Present RTI’s work in conferences, seminars and workshops.
 
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field with 12 years of relevant work experience; or Master’s Degree in education or related field with 10years of related work experience; or; Ph.D. in education and 6 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience supporting education programming in LMIC contexts, specifically technical assistance in support of TPD.
  • Familiarity with current trends in international education TPD and other facets of international education.
  • Experience writing and contributing to technical proposals, including serving as the lead proposal writer, performing capture/scoping work, partnership development, and reviewing proposals.
  • Experience managing primary education activities in LMIC contexts.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship.
 
Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience developing and leading pre-service teacher training programs and materials
  • Experience in strengthening policy and systems related to teacher education and management
  • Experience with gender-based and inclusive education and retention strategies and approaches
  • Proficiency in Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic and/or French a plus.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
  • Excellent interpersonal and collaboration skills
  • Excellent knowledge of MS Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and meet deadlines under pressure
  • Ability to work independently and within matrixed teams
  • Attention to detail and accuracy.
