Seagate Intern - Device Physics Spin-Stand - Summer 2022

About our group:
The Device Physics Pillar within the Seagate Research Group (SRG) consists of the Joint HAMR Lab (JHL) and the Advanced Recording group. The Advanced Recording group is responsible for performing experiments and simulations to guide the design of future hard disk drive (HDD) products, based on Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) technology. You will be responsible for performing spin-stand experiments that will elucidate critical HAMR physics mechanisms. This will require working closely with engineers within SRG and from other groups within the company to develop and perform advanced spin-stand metrology to test advanced HAMR heads and media and evaluate advanced HDD system architectures.
About the role - you will:
Learn about the physics of HAMR, and what are some of the critical issues facing HAMR development.
Use spin stands to provide expert lab-level characterization of advanced recording components and system architectures.
Write software to develop novel test methods.
Work very closely with engineers within SRG and from other organizations within the company to achieve your goals.
About you:
- Student with a BS degree pursuing an MS or PhD degree in an engineering discipline
- Experience in programming languages (Cuda, C++, Fortran, Python).
- Experience with machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, etc.)
- Able to manage multiple tasks concurrently.
- Work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of engineers and technicians.
- Demonstrated innovation and are a self-motivated worker.
- Intense desire to learn.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience with Linux based computing hardware.
