Biological Laboratory Technician

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is seeking an individual who possesses the energy, passion, and commitment to perform laboratory-based occupational safety and health research. The Regular Fellow program at CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) is for recruiting and providing scientific on-the-job training to entry-level scientists.

This position is in the Field Studies Branch, Respiratory Health Division, located at the NIOSH facility in Morgantown, WV. The position requires a minimum BS degree in a scientific field, preferably a BS or MS in chemistry or related discipline. On-site training will provide the necessary knowledge to perform duties. The candidate, however, must have a solid background in performing laboratory work such as pipetting, serial dilutions, and record keeping. This person will support laboratory activities associated with service and research projects including “Artificial stone countertops: exposures, controls, surveillance, & translation”. They will also contribute to obtaining laboratory accreditation activities through development of process and procedure documents describing the work conducted in the laboratory. Opportunities for field sampling and travel may be available. Duties of this position include but are not limited to:
·        Preparation and analysis of canister samples and other samples for volatile organic compound monitoring;
·        Preparation and operation of emission chambers;
·        Calibration and operation of real-time instruments;
·        Management and analysis of sampler and instrument data;
·        Organization and maintenance of the laboratory and cleanliness of the experimental work areas;
·        Ordering of laboratory supplies and management of chemical inventories;
·        Maintenance and accuracy of experimental records; and
·        Development of process and procedure documentation for accreditation activities.

This Regular fellowship is a temporary appointment that lasts one year, but may be extended up to 7 years. The fellowship appointments are non-status, non-permanent appointments. Benefits and relocation expenses are not provided. Payment is by monthly stipend. The hiring process takes 90–120 days. Term appointments can be non-competitively extended pending satisfactory performance and availability of funds.  

Work Schedule: Typically, Monday through Friday, 8am-4:30pm. 

Qualifications and Pay:
Must have obtained, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in a scientific field.
GS-05: Bachelor’s Degree   $35,265
GS-07: Master’s Degree       $43,683
GS-09: Doctoral Degree       $53,433

Health insurance is required to be carried by the employee.
