Adult Education Management Intern

BACKGROUND:

The IRC New York Regional office’s Education & Learning department aims to meet the educational needs of adult refugee, asylee, and immigrant populations in New York City. We offer a variety of classes and services, including English language instruction, Cultural Orientation, College and Career Readiness, and referrals to external educational opportunities. Together, these form a comprehensive multi-faceted program designed to meet the immediate and ongoing education needs of our diverse group of clients.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Enroll adult students and in appropriate classes around NY
  • Keep track of client communication and follow-up on attendance 
  • Maintain timely databases on the different tracking systems
  • Be an advocate for clients’ educational needs with external education service providers
  • Attend weekly supervision meetings with the program Coordinator

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
  • The Adult Education Management Intern will
  • Get hands-on experience working with refugee populations soon after they arrive in the US
  • Learn about the refugee resettlement process in NYC
  • Build communication and outreach skills with different stakeholders

 REQUIREMENTS: 
  • Comfort working with refugees and immigrants from a variety of backgrounds, including those with limited formal education and/or literacy skills
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations, comfortable working in a fast-paced, demanding environment
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in MS Office suite (especially Excel)
  • Responsible, flexible, and dedicated
  • Reliable: will commit to term and hours listed above
  • Must be able to pass a background check
  • Experience teaching Adults or English language learners a plus
  • Bilingual speaking abilities highly desirable (Spanish, French, Arabic, Pashto, Dari, or Farsi)
