Immigration Legal Services Intern

POSITION SUMMARY:  
This internship is geared towards law students, who will collaborate with our Immigration Legal Services program. Interns will get hands-on legal experience and serve the local immigrant community through legal assistance and community education seminars. For this opportunity, it is required that applicants have taken an introductory immigration law course or have prior immigration law experience and are either a current or former law student.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

·      Interview clients in-person and telephonically
·      Observe consultation interviews
·      Prepare immigration legal documents and forms using the LawLogix case management application
·      Assist with case management
·      Research immigration law, forms, and filing procedures
·      Participate in trainings in-person and via webinar
  • Co-facilitate know-your-rights seminars and special clinics

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
·      Highly organized
·      Ability to work effectively and sensitively with people of diverse cultural and religious backgrounds
·      Ability to speak clearly and comfortably on the phone with partners and participants, which include people with limited English abilities and/or the use of interpreters
·      Ability to utilize communication over internet tools such as Zoom and other programs
·      Confidentiality and Professionalism
·      Bilingual Spanish, Farsi, Dari, Arabic, or Russian desired

REQUIREMENTS:
·      Committed to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
·      Desire to serve and empower the Church to impact vulnerable communities 
·      Acknowledge World Relief’s faith statement
·      Pass a background check
·      The commitment of 240h, with a minimum of 15h/week
·      Fluency in written and spoken English
·      Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, cloud storage, etc)
·      Academic-year internships are open to applicants in their 2L, 3L or 4L years. Ten-week summer internships are open to undergraduates and law students
·      Have taken an introductory immigration law course or have prior immigration law experience and are either a current or former law student.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:  
•      General office setting. 
•      Great lengths of time working on computer, reading from computer screen, entering information, standing at copier or fax machine, and some time on the phone or in skype meetings may be required.
•      Year-end archiving activities involve repeated lifting and bending.
•      Physical, emotional and intellectual demands
•      Equipment used: intern computer (desktop or laptop), printer, and copier.
