Position Summary
Woodlynde School welcomes and serves students who learn differently and empowers them to become strategic learners and self-advocates in a challenging and supportive college preparatory environment. The art teacher will be responsible for providing a student centered, supportive classroom for sixth – twelfth grade students.
Key Responsibilities Include:
● Designing an art program that is consistent with Woodlynde School’s mission and provides a learning experience in the areas of art and creativity at grade levels 6-12.
● Teach a Guided Art Experience class where students will explore specific techniques within art, making that focus on the process of making artwork, not the product.
● Teach an Independent Art Experience where students will be responsible for designing, crafting, and reflecting upon their individually designed projects.
● Teach an Open Studio class in which Art Majors are given full freedom to make portfolio-quality pieces intended to further or finish their portfolio for college acceptance.
● Teach three tiered levels of Studio Art as well as an Art Major to Upper School students interested in developing their art skills.
● Show evidence of adapting and differentiated instruction for all students.
● Instruct students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
● Maintain complete and accurate records that are reflective of a student’s performance and growth in knowledge of aesthetic understandings.
● Develop and maintain genuine, positive and consistent communication with parents.
● In conjunction with the lower school art teacher, plan and present art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work as well as other members of the community, for the school and the community and oversee the Celebration of the Arts.
● Contribute to and benefit from the campus community.
● Practice professionalism through ongoing professional development, reflection and continuous improvement.
● In addition to subject matter teaching, this position includes significant student mentoring that includes an after-school Art Portfolio program allowing students to continue to build their portfolio for college admissions.
● Participate in the development and review of curriculum.
● Other duties as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications and Qualities
● A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in education or related field is required for consideration.
● Instructional I Art K-12
● Solid subject matter knowledge in art and creativity.
● Experience working with students with learning disabilities and a commitment to supporting each student’s learning profile
● Excellent oral and written communication skills and a strong attention to detail.
● Strength in organizational and interpersonal skills and the ability to serve as a positive role model.
● Knowledge of the developmental, social, and emotional needs of Middle and Upper School students.
● An individual who is eager to work in a highly dynamic, energetic school setting as an integral member of a team.
● An individual who is a self-directed, proactive, problem solver who connects with students with patience and compassion.
