Whatcom Intergenerational High School: School Enrollment AmeriCorps VISTA

Seeking outgoing individual to build supportive connections between underserved families and a new, innovative public charter school. Create capacity for communications and generating enthusiasm!

Whatcom Intergenerational High School is a tuition free public charter high school serving Whatcom County. Students co-create their classroom experience, enabling them to pursue their passions, think critically, solve problems, and be creative. This phenomenon-based learning approach helps them develop a strong sense of individual and community culture while exploring real-world skills. Students are taught to understand that no text is neutral – bias is in everything. Critical Literacy is the ability to spot these biases and see the power dynamics in books, social media, music, art, news, and other resources. Community elders provide education, support, and connection for students, both in and out of the classroom.

The student recruitment and enrollment program is organized into four main sections:
1. Developing prospective family contacts (creating awareness of WIHS),
2. Generating inquiries from contacts (educate families about opportunities at WIHS, introduce elements of programming through intentional/thoughtful marketing),
3. Converting inquiries to applications (persuading families to make the decision to commit and join WIHS),
4. Keeping applicants engaged and retaining enrollment (post-decision; maintaining contact, enthusiasm, and deepening relationships).

There are a LOT of moving parts, and it is important to track conversations and movement with interests and commitment levels. The person in this position essentially operates as a WIHS representative to all external groups/organizations/communities, and works to connect with as many people as possible.

The Opportunity Council VISTA Cohort in Bellingham includes monthly team meetings, Professional Development opportunities, fun team-building events, and 4 annual Days of Service.

Activities will include media/marketing, active outreach/communications with organizations and individuals/families, content creation (for social media, flyers, event ads, etc.), enrollment status tracking, database development and organization, event planning and evaluation (info sessions, studios, single day activities, etc.), and additional team support. Steady and consistent recruitment efforts focused on our most marginalized communities are crucial for WIHS’ ability to serve young people who do not currently have access and opportunity. This will be accomplished through recruitment planning, family engagement planning, and evaluation.
