Secondary Special Education Autism Teacher

General Responsibilities:
Responsible for providing direct instruction to students with autism and related developmental disabilities. Responsible for assisting with and implementing special education instructional programs, and following state and federal policies regarding special education procedures.

  • Uses a variety of effective instructional strategies and resources individualized to meet students’ needs to promote independence
  • Provides direct instruction and in-class support to students with autism and related developmental disabilities in a variety of both special education and general education settings throughout the school
  • Aligns IEP goals to instructional plans and aligns instructional plans to the SOLs/ASOLs and school curriculum
  • Implements instruction based on the students’ needs in the areas of communication and social skills
  • Differentiates instruction to meet students’ needs
  • Uses a variety of assessment strategies and instruments that are valid and appropriate for the content and for the individual student
  • Collects data related to student’s IEP goals and objectives
  • Analyzes assessment and program data to make data driven decisions and demonstrates ability to adapt teaching materials and strategies based on student data
  • Uses accommodations and modifications as determined by the IEP to support instruction
  • Establishes a climate centered around the student that promotes dignity and respect
  • Implements individual Behavior Intervention Plans, and school-wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports consistently
  • Supports students when they engage in challenging behaviors and teaches appropriate replacement behaviors
  • Monitors and documents the progress of each student according to their IEP within federal, state, and division timelines
  • Collaborates and communicates effectively within the school community to promote inclusion and student success 
  • Provides clear expectations and guidance for collaborating paraprofessionals
  • Works in a collegial and collaborative manner with administrators, related services personnel, paraprofessionals, other school personnel, and the community
  • Builds positive and professional relationships with parents/guardians through frequent and effective communication concerning students’ progress
  • Adheres to federal and state laws, school policies, and ethical guidelines 
  • Perform related work as required.
