The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Staunton District is seeking a dynamic self-motivated candidate to join its Accounting Team. The successful candidate will have the ability to perform in-depth pre-audit analysis on all expenditure documents to ensure compliance with State and VDOT policies, procedures and guidelines along with providing assistance and/or training to team members and internal customers regarding coding and compliance issues.

In addition, the successful candidate will insure Accounts Receivables are processed appropriately, monitor collection processes, facilitate customer payments, process cash receipts and maintain accounting records in accordance with published retention schedules. The candidate will also provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers in a timely and professional manner while upholding a high level of ethics. Finally, the candidate will assist the Accounting Manager with other general accounting tasks as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must be skilled in handling multiple tasks simultaneously and organizing work to meet deadlines, be able to work independently, have experience with accounts payable, general ledger and account reconciliation, in addition to having working knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP). Candidates must have experience with interpreting and applying complex regulations, accounting principles, practices, policies and procedures and the ability to evaluate the adequacy of documentation submitted with expenditures and determine if compliant with State and Federal guidelines. Also candidates must be skilled with the use of computers, financial software programs, Microsoft Excel and working with detailed numerical data. Candidates must be able to research, analyze, reconcile and interpret financial data, perform detailed work, perform arithmetical calculations, prepare reports, communicate effectively both orally and in writing and effectively manage time and work as a team member.

Preferred Qualifications
Graduation from college or university with major studies in accounting preferred, or a combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the work. Accounts payable experience using PeopleSoft automated accounting system preferred.
