SUMMARY:
Huntington Medical Research Institutes is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to improving lives through patient-focused scientific research. Our brand-new state of the art laboratory anchors the biomedical corridor on South Fair Oaks in Pasadena. Our scientists’ research focuses on the connection between the brain and heart, developing diagnostic tools to help treat common diseases of these vital organs that affect every family.

Under indirect supervision, the EEG Reseach Assistant operates EEG equipment and performs a variety of technical duties to measure impulse frequencies and differences in electrical potential between various areas of the brain on study participants in order to obtain data for use by the Senior Research Staff Scientist to investigate the underlying mechanisms of Alzheimer’s disease, migraine, and other conditions.

Apart from arranging study participant visits, the EEG Research Assistant also gathers a medical history, explains testing procedures, and prepares the participant for the procedure. The EEG Research Assistant must be innovative and driven as well as accurate, detail-oriented, and knowledgeable.

The EEG Research Assistant reports directly to the Senior Research Staff Scientist and interfaces with other HMRI staff members from the neurosciences department (research investigators, research scientists, and/or laboratory supervisors).

JOB QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Arrange study participant visits for EEG/electrophysiology
  • Supervises arrival and departure of participants
  • Prepares participants for experiments and provide answers to their questions.
  • Electrophysiology data collection and data processing.
  • Data analysis
  • Good record keeping.
  • May be involved with analysis of data, presentations, writing, etc.
  • The EEG Research Assistant also performs a wide range of job duties as assigned and requested.
Education and Experience
  • Applicants must have completed a BS or MS. Preferred but not required, PhD, an MD, or an MD, PhD program and may have no more than five years of research training or experience since obtaining a doctoral-level degree.
  • In addition to ABRET registration or eligibility, ideal candidates should have at least one year in an EEG Lab as a trainee, or experience typically associated with the completion of an accredited EEG certification program. Candidate should have knowledge of basic principles of common diseases encountered in the practice of EEG testing, proper use of technical instruments as well as the ability to provide exceptional customer service.
  • Current BLS/CPR certification
  • 2-5 years of related experience

  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively.
  • Outstanding computer skills. Must be proficient with MS Office programs (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Observes laboratory safety and security procedures
  • Uses laboratory equipment and materials properly
  • Must be a reliable and conscientious self-starter, with excellent attention to detail and ability to coordinate multiple projects and deadlines
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships with colleagues, building respect, consensus, and trust across reporting lines
