Position Status:         Part-time; Non-Exempt (10-12 hours per week – up to 150 hours)
 
Position summary:
The Virginia Museum of History & Culture is the oldest cultural organization in Virginia, and one of the oldest and most distinguished history organizations in the nation. As we approach our institution’s 200th anniversary, we are committed to being more engaging, inclusive, and inspiring to encourage and empower the history makers of both today and tomorrow.
We are in the middle of a massive renovation and reimagining project to create an entirely new and compelling museum experience -- Join us on this exciting journey!
We are seeking a Marketing Intern beginning in August or September 2021 to support our full-time staff in developing content for our social media and web channels. The ideal candidate will be a creative individual with a passion for history, excellent writing and research skills, and knowledge of/experience with technology and marketing concepts.
 
Duties & Responsibilities:
·        Assists with development of new content for current social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter
·        Analyzes use of TikTok and other newer platforms to suggest ways in which the museum might effectively use these channels
·        Creates video content and takes photos in galleries and at VMHC events for use on digital channels  
·        Works with other departments to expand content and showcase a variety of museum stories (ex. exhibition features, artifact highlights, profiles of staff and donors, special events, etc.)
·        Researches and proposes creative new ways to expand and engage audiences
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
 
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Necessary:
·        Creativity and ability to think in new and innovative ways
·        Excellent written and oral communication skills
·        Ability to work autonomously and proactively
·        Ability to connect with diverse audiences and partners
·        Must be outgoing and comfortable cold calling/emailing
·        Must possess great accuracy and attention to detail
·        Ability to prioritize and thoughtfully plan work activities combined with a willingness to adapt and flex quickly to changing needs
·        Ability to meet deadlines
 
 
Education & Experience Requirements:
·        Undergraduate student in a degree program for journalism, marketing, communications, history, or other field relevant to the work required with a 3.0 GPA or higher
·        Experience using multiple social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok)
·        High level of comfort using new technology interfaces
·        Solid grasp of grammatical rules and writing styles for online platforms
·        Experience in video editing and photography for social media
·        Knowledge of/interest in Virginia history a plus
 
Note & Special Requirements:
Hours: Flexible work hours around student’s schedule - one semester beginning in Fall 2021. 10-12 hours per week on average with the potential for limited weekend and evening events.
