Job Description

The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) is seeking a Community Coordinator to join the communications team within the Bureau of Recycling and Sustainability. Reporting to Director of Zero Waste Communications with varying degrees of latitude for independent initiative, judgment, and decision making, the successful candidate will perform professional, complex, project management and public education content development for the Department’s zero waste programs and initiatives. Responsibilities include:

• Coordinate the development, implementation, tracking and evaluation of public education campaigns
• Coordinate the development, implementation, tracking and evaluation of social media and website content, e-newsletters, html emails, and presentations
• Copywriting, copy editing, proofreading, and version control of public education materials
• Develop and execute detailed and organized tracking of digital and print assets including, using software platforms and physical archiving systems. Including, but not limited to, uploading, cataloging, and filter-tagging of digital photography
• Liaise between communications team and program managers to meet multiple competing deadlines.
• Support other Bureau functions as needed. May require occasional evening or weekend work.

Minimum Qual Requirements

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.

Preferred Skills

• Degree in Liberal Arts, Communications, Marketing, Public Relations, English, Journalism, or Library Science
• Strong communication skills; ability to tailor complex messages to diverse audiences.
• Strong, demonstrated copy-editing skills
• Strong administrative, organizational, interpersonal, writing, and data management skills.
• Proficiency in use of word processing and data management applications including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Working knowledge of Adobe InDesign and/or Adobe Photoshop
• Knowledge of sustainable waste management practices.
• In addition to English, fluency in a foreign language including, but not limited to: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Korean, Haitian Creole, Arabic, Bengali, Hindi, Urdu, and Hebrew.
• Possession of a New York State Motor Vehicle Driver’s License.
