Counselor/Instructor, Veterans Services
Napa Valley College is seeking an equity-minded individual with demonstrated instructional skills to join an outstanding team of faculty and instructional administrators to provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly, our Veteran students.
This position provides personal, academic and career counseling to students beginning Fall Semester 2021 and may require teaching in the Department of Counseling at Napa Valley College.
This full-time, tenure-track faculty position works a 175-day faculty work year, plus 23 additional days of counseling services to support General Counseling and Veterans Services, as approved by the Vice President of Student Affairs, and in accordance with the district/faculty agreement. Appointments are contingent upon approval of the college's Board of Trustees. Initial salary placement is $59,494 - $69,168 annually, with future steps to $97,780. Placement on the salary range is commensurate with education and experience. Veterans Services at Napa Valley College
Napa Valley College has a robust number of Veterans and eligible dependents who seek academic, career, and personal guidance for the development of their educational plans in order to receive Veterans education benefits. A full-time Veterans Services Specialist processes benefits and acts as a point of contact to our Veterans. A Veterans Resource Center exists at the College to serve as a place for Veterans to study, relax, and hang out with other veterans, as well as for meetings and presentations by special guests. A Veterans Affairs Student Veteran Health Program counselor is also available to serve the mental health needs of our Veterans.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Senior Dean of Counseling and Student Success and the Vice President of Student Affairs, the Counselor will:
- Provide personal, academic and career counseling to Veteran and General students;
- Develop educational plans for Veteran and General students;
- Develop and teach counseling courses and collaborate in developing Veteran workshops;
- Act as liaison with faculty regarding courses and Veterans Services projects;
- Assist with any development/revision of curriculum;
- Advisor for identified Veteran clubs and organizations, as needed;
- Assist in preparing project reports;
- Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with various Federal, State, and local Veterans Services and other community agencies;
- Assist in preparing outreach materials;
- Work in collaboration with the Veterans Services Office on campus, located in the Financial Aid Office
- Participate in appropriate counseling and faculty/staff meetings and college-wide student retention and success efforts; and
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Assignment may include a combination of day, evening, weekend, off-campus classes and online or other technology-supported instruction along with counseling services. All counselors and instructors are required to adhere to contractual obligations, meet assigned classes, maintain regular office hours, assist and advise students, participate in division activities and appropriate college committees, including regular faculty meetings of the department, division and college. JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Qualifications
Education:
1. Master's in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, marriage and family therapy or marriage, family and child counseling, OR
2. A bachelor's degree in one of the listed degrees above and a license as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT), OR

All degrees must be from an accredited institution.
Experience:
- One year of full time experience (or equivalent) in academic counseling of Student Veterans
- Demonstrated experience teaching academic support and career planning classes.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Desirable Professional Competencies
- One year of full-time or two years of part-time counseling and/or teaching experience at the community college level.
- Background knowledge of Veterans educational planning and corresponding regulations related to Veterans educational benefits.
- Demonstrated experience using technology to deliver instructional and counseling services.
- Experience teaching in a learning community.
- Ability to implement strategies to involve students in the learning process and to address the needs of diverse learning styles through the use of a variety of learning modalities.
- Ability to develop cooperative relationships with other departments, programs, and institutions.
- Effective written and oral communication skills.
