General Counsel for Columbia Association, Maryland

The Columbia (Maryland) Association (CA) is seeking a General Counsel. CA is a 501(c)4 nonprofit community services organization that manages Columbia, Maryland. Home to approximately 100,000 people, Columbia is located in Howard County within 20 miles of Baltimore and 30 miles of Washington, D.C. Columbia consistently receives accolades as a top 20 place to live from Money Magazine and Niche.com. Columbia was founded in 1967 by James Rouse and the Howard Research and Development Company to create a community of choice that respected the natural environment, welcomed diversity, and provided a full complement of services for personal development and well-being.

The General Counsel reports to the President/CEO and serves as a strategic partner of an 11-member senior leadership team. As a trusted advisor, General Counsel shares the legal implications of anticipated policy and operational decisions within areas of employment, environmental, sports and recreation, child-care, financing, insurance, real property, social media, intellectual property, information technology and cyber security, and homeowners’ association law. Strong negotiation and collaboration skills are a must for success in this role. The General Counsel assures compliance with employment laws, works with the Chief Financial Officer on insurance, risk management, benefits and 401(k) matters, and oversees the covenant enforcement process.

The General Counsel position requires a Juris Doctor degree and broad-based professional legal experience. Candidates must possess a license to practice law in the State of Maryland or a state with reciprocity and be a member in good standing in their respective State Bar. Qualified candidates must have a keen business acumen, excellent interpersonal, communications and listening skills, and experience working with and supporting a Board of Directors or similar governing body. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong record of community and/or organizational leadership, a history of service on philanthropic and/or community service boards, and experience leading organizational change and continuous improvement.  

The salary range for this position is $180,000 - $220,000 depending on qualifications and experience.
