The Education Department at the National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC) is dedicated to assisting educators, students and the diverse public in being lifelong learners as they deepen their knowledge about the American story through the African American lens. NMAAHC Education is comprised of: Teaching and Learning, Early Childhood Education, Audience Engagement, and Internships and Fellowships.
The Public Programs Research Assistant Intern will have the opportunity to assist program producers in researching content, presenters, and other assets needed to develop NMAAHC public programs. They can expect to learn skills and techniques utilized by museum educators to conceptualize and deliver large-scale virtual programs such as film screenings, moderated discussions, live performances, symposia, and participatory programs. The intern will also gain experience working ‘behind-the-scenes’ of the program the day of the event. It is a part-time opportunity (10-15 hours/week). This internship is designed to allow students to pursue academic credit. Applicants currently pursuing graduate degrees in Library and Information Science, History, African American Studies, Museum Studies, Anthropology, and related disciplines are preferred. Applicants in their junior and senior year of undergraduate study with experience conducting literature reviews are welcome to apply as well.
Duties Include (but are not limited to):
- Researching potential presenters and program content
- Examining resources needed to develop program proposals and conversation outlines
- Keeping minutes during planning meetings
- Analyzing audience evaluation data
- Designing promotional materials and web content
- Assisting with the program the day of events

The National Museum of African American History and Culture will offer available internships as online experiences to meet current health and safety guidelines set forth by the Smithsonian Institution.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Students who are currently enrolled in an academic program, as well as individuals who have recently completed studies. All majors are welcome.
A cumulative GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent is generally expected (with withdrawals and incompletes explained).
Ability to work a minimum of twenty hours per week.
Interns should possess enthusiasm, strong writing and organizational skills and proficient computer skills.
