Grounds/Maintenance Technician

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:
 
Grounds and Maintenance Technician, under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, performs hands on care and maintenance of New Kent County government buildings, grounds and recreation areas. The Grounds/Maintenance Technician may work closely with custodial, maintenance, and refuse/recycling staff. The incumbent must have knowledge about lawn care equipment maintenance and operations, and needs to exercise good judgment and be able to work under pressure. Work may be performed indoors or outdoors where uncomfortable conditions may exist and some lifting is required. The incumbent is expected to perform job related tasks as assigned or requires.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 
  • Maintains grounds by mowing, blowing, raking, weeding, trimming and cutting of county properties;
  • Performs basic repairs and maintenance on county outbuildings and lawn mowing equipment;
  • Assist in the construction and repair of buildings, grounds, benches, picnic, tables, parking lots and fences;
  • Debris collection;
  • Custodial duties as assigned;
  • Other duties as assigned.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
 
The Grounds/Maintenance Technician should have knowledge of basic tools, machinery and mechanical repair; working knowledge of the operation and maintenance of manual and mechanical equipment used in grounds maintenance. the ability to follow oral and written directions; the willingness to perform physical labor; dependability; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
 
The Grounds/Maintenance Technician should possess any combination of education equivalent to graduation from high school and work experience operating and maintaining grounds maintenance machinery and equipment, OR any acceptable combination determined to be sufficient to perform the essential functions listed above.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (continued):
 
The Grounds/Maintenance Technician must possess a pesticide certification or successfully complete the certification within six months of date of hire.


PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND NATURE OF WORK CONTACTS:
 
The work environment is indoors and outdoors where exposure to adverse weather conditions and pollutants occur. The work requires a high degree of physical strain, lifting heavy objects, strength and endurance. Prolonged periods of standing and walking are required. While performing custodial work occasional exposure to hazardous substances, such as caustic chemicals and other cleaning agents is required.

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness with which the incumbent accomplishes the above responsibilities.
