Forest Health Program

Location:
San Juan, Puerto Rico with International Institute of Tropical Forestry

Position Description:
This position is located at a Forest Service Unit. The incumbent coordinates with State Forestry Agency partners to perform forest insect and disease (FID) detection surveys, manipulates geographic information system (GIS) map bases, and edits, maintains, and assists with the reporting of survey GIS data; recommend management actions in coordination with the UPR-Mayaguez Forest Health Clinic for specialized assistance.

Duties:
  • Plans, coordinates, and conducts insect detection surveys and biological evaluations on Federal, State, and private lands. Analyzes data and prepares complete and comprehensive reports. Makes recommendations to resource managers on pest management methods. Coordinates and conduct field work in detection, prevention, evaluation, and suppression activities. Promotes safety when making work assignments.
  • Participates in complex insect prevention and suppression projects where the conduct of the projects can reduce the adverse effects of a pest.
  • Makes recommendations on proven reforestation, harvesting, and silvicultural practices which will reduce insect losses.
  • Plans, organizes, and conducts pilot projects and field tests to determine the value of new or improved materials, strategies, or techniques for operational use in insect survey, evaluation, or control.
  • Uses ArcGIS software to report insect and diseases occurrence as well as treated areas.
  • Data mapping skills required

Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree or PhD candidates preferable in entomology or phytopathology. Knowledge in forest health monitoring techniques and protocols.
  • Requirement: fluent in English and Spanish, spoken and written.
  • Skills: computer literate, basic statistics, good with teamwork, flexibility under quickly changing working conditions (i.e., pandemic), can work independently, can search and learn independently.
  • Software: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, MS Outlook, MS Teams, Zoom, Google Drive, Google Docs, Google sheets, Google Slides, Arc GIS, Surveyor 123, and related tools.

*This is a 1099 position. Persons paid on a 1099 basis are independent contractors and are self-employed.
