The Social Science Research Council (SSRC) is an independent, nonprofit international organization devoted to the advancement of interdisciplinary research in the social sciences. The SSRC invites applications for the position of Program Assistant for the Mellon Mays Graduate Initiatives Program. The Mellon Mays Program aims to diversify the faculties in core fields within the arts and sciences at colleges and universities by providing support for African American, Latino, and Native American scholars and others with a demonstrated commitment to this goal. The program holds several events each year for its fellows and provides annual grant opportunities.
 
The Program Assistant will actively manage the program’s primary social media channels, web content, and fellowship database. They will also work with the Program Director and program staff to organize, administer, and implement fellow events and the annual grants. This position will require energy; enthusiasm; strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills; and creativity, innovation, and flexibility. In addition, the ideal candidate must be able to travel domestically (when allowed after Covid-19 restrictions are lifted) and on occasion internationally. The Program Assistant will provide overall administrative support for the intellectual vision of the program.
 
Responsibilities:
 
  • Manage digital content for social media and online platforms.
  • Update and maintain website content.
  • Serve as the first point of contact for Mellon Mays fellows, faculty advisors, and representatives of partner institutions and organizations.
  • Assist the Program Director and other staff in the planning and implementation of seminars, workshops, and conferences on a virtual platform.
  • Assist the Program Director and other staff in the disbursal of grants
  • Provide on- and offsite support for program events
  • Manage fellowship database and provide administrative support for the application review process.
  • Oversee payment processing for fellows and vendors.
  • Perform site visits at affiliated colleges and universities in the United States and abroad.
  • Respond to requests for information by phone and email.
  • Sort and distribute incoming regular mail.
Qualifications
  • BA in one of the social sciences or humanistic disciplines.
  • Experience in digital content creation.
  • High level of proficiency with all Microsoft Office applications, as well as database and internet applications, communications technology, and social media.
  • Knowledge of current scial media best practices.
  • Superior organizational skills, with ability to multitask and prioritize daily activities to meet competing deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including solid presentation skills.
  • Ability to work independently and with a team.
  • Understanding of, and commitment to, the goals of the Mellon Mays Program and the inclusion of underserved populations and diversity in higher education.
 
Terms, Salary and Benefits  
Annual salary is $40,000. Comprehensive benefits include health, dental, vision, disability, life, and gym reimbursement; outstanding pension plan and tax savings programs; generous vacation and sick leave; and more.
