Match Associate Teacher

Associate Teachers are placed on grade-level (K-5) or subject level (6-12) teams in Match Public Charter Schools for an intensive year-long apprenticeship. Throughout the year, our Associate Teachers are coached and mentored by school leaders at Match and slowly assume more classroom responsibilities. All of our Associate Teachers are also enrolled in the Sposato Graduate School of Education. SGSE offers highly practical, hands-on training in effectively designing and implementing rigorous instruction, and in building classroom cultures consistent with achievement, purposefulness and joy. Through courses, coaching and classroom experience, Associate Teachers improve their teaching and planning expertise with the goal of becoming lead teachers at Match and other schools with similar missions the following year. This role is based at either Match Community Day School (100 Poydras St.), Match Middle School (at 215 Forest Hills St.) or Match High School (1001 Commonwealth Ave.) in Boston, MA.
HOW IT WORKS
Year 1:
  • Match Associate Teachers (MATs) spend full days in the nationally acclaimed Match Charter Public School, which serves low-income students in grades pre-K-12 in Boston.
  • MATs spend time daily in classrooms where they observe, assist, and ultimately assume student teaching responsibilities.
  • Two nights per week plus Saturdays in the fall, MATs attend graduate classes, complete assignments (e.g. practicing lesson planning and analyzing video of effective teachers), and participate in teaching simulations through the Sposato Graduate School of Education (SGSE).
  • SGSE coaches and faculty provide frequent personalized feedback to MATs as they ramp up in their teaching responsibilities.
  • At the end of the year at Match, successful MATs get a Massachusetts “Initial” teaching license, and obtain a full-time teaching position in a high-performing urban school in the city of their choice.
Year 2:
  • MAT graduates work as full-time teachers in high-performing public schools serving low-income populations.
  • As Sposato students, they participate in a year-long remote course that’s supported by individualized coaching. Their classroom practice is evaluated using a battery of assessments to determine conferment of a Master’s in Effective Teaching (MET) degree.
