This career opportunity with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) is for a passionate, talented and results-oriented Architect that likes to work on a wide variety of unique projects. The successful candidate will help provide the wild places and people of Texas with high quality, sustainable and accessible recreational and support facilities at such varied and challenging TPWD locations as sensitive and delicate hurricane-prone coastal State Parks, fresh and saltwater fish Hatcheries, historic buildings and sites, beautiful Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), and other interesting sites. Of course, the best part is that the successful candidate will be able to meet and work with dedicated TPWD staff around the state, who are as diverse and unique as the sites where they work!

Projects will be comprised of those listed in the Agency’s Capital Construction Portfolio, which varies every biennium, but typically includes renovation or new construction of headquarters buildings, restrooms, offices, maintenance complexes, bunkhouses, hunter check stations and residences.

To execute the required work, periodic travel will be necessary to TPWD sites across the state such as State Parks at Palo Duro Canyon, Balmorhea, Colorado Bend, Big Bend Ranch, Enchanted Rock, Mustang Island, Tyler, and Dinosaur Valley. WMAs range from the Hill Country’s Kerr WMA to Justin Hurst WMA on the southeast coastal plain to Chaparral WMA in the South Texas brush country to Gene Howe on the Panhandle prairies. TPWD Hatchery facilities include the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Visitor Center and Hatchery in Athens and the Sea Center Texas Visitor Center and Hatchery in Lake Jackson.

Under the direction of the Design Branch Manager within the Infrastructure Division, the Architect/Design Manager performs and oversees complex design, scoping, research, documentation and review tasks from initial project scoping to completion of construction. Collaborates with other divisional staff members including Program Manager, Project Managers, Contract Managers, Accountants, Construction Managers and Inspectors. Collaborates with other in-house Architects, Landscape Architects, and Engineers. Collaborates with outside consultants performing design work for the Agency including Architects, Landscape Architects, and Engineers.  Works under minimal supervision, with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency, Division and Branch rules, regulations and procedures.

 

 

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture.

Ten (10) years experience in architectural design work under the direction of, or as a licensed Architect;

Six (6) years experience in architectural and contracted construction management work.

NOTE: Experience may have occurred concurrently.

Must possess a valid class “C” Texas driver’s license;

Must possess a current and active Architectural License in the State of Texas, as issued by the Texas Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE), or possess a current and active Architectural License in another state and be able to receive a license in Texas by reciprocal transfer within six months of hire date.

NOTE: Retention of position contingent upon obtaining and maintaining required licenses.

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in Architecture may substitute for one year of the required experience in architectural design work under the direction of, or as a licensed Architect. 

Experience in architectural design work on historic structures, urban design or related specialty.

Current architecture license in state of Texas.

Knowledge of architectural and design principles, techniques, and procedures;

Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws and building codes relevant to designing facilities at TPWD;

Knowledge of construction process methods and materials;

Knowledge of the A/E design professions and standards of care in the industry;

Knowledge standard A/E responsibilities relating to performance and contracts;

Knowledge of LEED rating system and green building and sustainable building principles;

Knowledge of the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards for Rehabilitation and Guidelines for Rehabilitating Historic Buildings;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel, and Outlook;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in use of architectural tools in the realm of problem solving;

Skill in reviewing and monitoring the design work of others;

Skill in making presentations to customers and division peers;

Skill in using AutoCad and/or similar architectural design software;

Skill in site planning and architectural programming;

Skill in coordinating architectural, design, and construction projects;

Skill in graphic representation of design ideas;

Skill in estimating construction costs for design work;

Skill in negotiating A/E contracts and fees;

Ability to effectively conduct meetings;

Ability to analyze, interpret and form professional opinions regarding building, life safety and accessibility codes;

Ability to communicate graphically using both hand sketching, CAD drawings, and other media to present project ideas to team members;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

Required to work 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday;

Required to work overtime, as necessary;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules, and safety procedures;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel up to 25% with possible overnight stays;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
