Supervisory Interdisciplinary Scientist (Supv Biologist/ Supv Physical Scientist/Supv Chemist)
This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration and is located in the National Center for Toxicological Research, Office of Scientific Coordination, located in Jefferson, AR.
Responsibilities
- Provides occupational specific technical and administrative direction 25 percent or more of the time to three or more subordinate employees performing the work and functions of the organization.
- Defines jobs, selects employees, and assigns work; defines technical work requirements and milestones, evaluates the organization and employee accomplishments by accepting or rejecting work products.
- Presents and defends organization and employees work to senior management and other offices.
- Assists the Director of the NanoCore in providing leadership, managing, and directing all research-related activities within the NanoCore.
- Responsible for providing administrative direction and scientific guidance to scientists including staff fellows, visiting scientists, and post-doctoral fellows involved with basic and applied research activities.
- Evaluates the current methodologies used to characterize nanoscale materials to be used in biological and toxicological studies and evaluates advances in these methodologies in the scientific and other literature, and when required.
- Responsible for providing research leadership and support for the Agency and other organizations through national and international agreements/collaborations.
- Provides expertise in the area of either (1) material characterization or (II) application of nanomaterial characterization methodologies for the biocompatibility and toxicological assessment.
Qualifications
The position of Supervisory Interdisciplinary Scientist (Supv Biologist/ Supv Physical Scientist/Supv Chemist) falls under the 0401/1301/1320 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-15, you must meet either of the Basic Requirements AND Specialized Experience as follows:
Basic Requirements
Supervisory Biologist (GS-401):
A. Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR
B. Have a combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. OR
Supervisory Physical Scientist (GS-1301)
A. Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics. OR
B. Have a combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education. OR
Supervisory Chemist (GS-1320)
A. Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR
B. Have a combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
In addition to meeting either of the Basic Requirements stated above, applicants must also meet the following:
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE
One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade of GS 14 or equivalent band level of responsibility in the federal service conducting and/or leading research activities of the laboratory related to Nanotechnology and/or Nanomaterials. Experience related to nanomaterial synthesis and/or analysis using techniques such as microscopy, spectroscopy, chromatography and scattering techniques.
