Virtual Non-Paid Student Intern with DOE Insider Threat

The DOE Insider Threat Program Internship is a semester-long, hybrid professional/educational opportunity that offers real-world work experience to undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career within the insider threat field, the intelligence community, or the federal government writ large. In the wake of recent events that have compromised national security, the United States Government (USG) has been instructed to establish insider threat programs across all USG departments and agencies. Therefore, insider threat is an emerging risk mitigation discipline that is situated at the nexus of security, law enforcement, and counterintelligence and which integrates the behavioral sciences. Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, we anticipate that this internship will be conducted largely virtually until that time when it is deemed appropriate for staff to physically return to the workplace.

Students should consult with academic faculty to determine if this unpaid experience will earn credit.

 

Interns will be tasked with a variety of carefully selected assignments based upon the real-time demands of the DOE Insider Threat Program, coupled with the intern’s academic and professional interests. They will consist of, at minimum, the following:

·        Individual research project: Each Intern will be responsible for completing an original, relevant, and academically rigorous project which will be due at the conclusion of their tenure, and formally presented to senior DOE leadership. The project is designed to leave a permanent (and potentially) actionable contribution to the DOE Insider Threat Program.

·        Insider Threat Newsletter: Each intern will be responsible for editing or co-editing one of the Program’s quarterly insider threat newsletters. Original article(s) could also be contributed and published.

·        Attendance at seminars and meetings: Interns are expected to attend all relevant Team meetings, and could occasionally accompany staff to seminars, working groups, and meetings at other US Government agencies.

·        Intern should have an interest in national security matters (i.e., counterintelligence, security, law enforcement, etc.).

·        Intern should have an interest in the DOE’s mission, especially with regard to its responsibilities concerning the nation's nuclear weapons program.

·        Intern should be organized, detail oriented, and able to work independently.

·        Intern should be flexible and adaptable to rapidly developing threat-related missions and taskings.

·        Intern must be able to work as a team member and should be able to both accept and implement constructive feedback.

·        Intern should possess an at least average level of computer proficiency (i.e., skills in Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, Excel, Access, and a collection database would be an advantage)

 

Preferred academic disciplines include the following: criminal justice, political science, behavioral sciences, cyber operations/cyber security studies, information technology (IT), security and risk analysis, homeland security and national security-related fields.
