Post Doctoral Scientist - Institute of Genomic Medicine, Wagner Laboratory

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Scientist to work in the Wagner Laboratory at the Steve and Cindy Rasmussen Institute for Genomic Medicine (IGM). This opportunity will provide mentored training in the computational application of biomedical knowledge to inform genomic medicine at IGM. Postdocs will be guided in the design and development of novel tools, methods, and analyses to aggregate and classify the clinical significance of genomic variation in pediatric diseases, particularly cancers. This role will involve participation in professional consortia to develop these products in collaboration with the broader clinical genomics community, with the objective of advancing the field of genomic medicine. Success in this role will require drafting of technical materials such as abstracts, annual reports, scientific papers, and presentations. Postdocs will be expected to present their work at national and international conferences, publish scientific articles in appropriate refereed journals, and seek extramural research funding with the goal of becoming independent in his/her research effort. Appointment as a Postdoctoral Scientist is a maximum of 5 years in length.


What Will You Be Doing?
  • Learning about clinical genomic knowledge curation and representation.
  • Designing novel information models to formalize semantic concepts from genomic knowledge.
  • Developing validation and search tools to improve clinical application of genomic knowledge.
  • Training and supervising technical staff to advance the research program.
  • Assisting graduate students in the design and analysis of scientific works.
  • Preparing scientific and technical papers from results of research work.
  • Presenting findings at local, national, and international research forums.
  • Collaborating with scientists at the Abigail Wexner Research Institute, Ohio State University, and elsewhere.
  • Participating in national and international clinical genomics consortia, including the Variant Interpretation for Cancer Consortium, the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health, and ClinGen.
  • Drafting proposals to obtain research funding from extramural granting agencies, including the NIH.


What Are We Looking For?
  • Must be a team player with strong communication and organizational skills.
  • MD or PhD with training in Genetics/Genomics, Computer Science, and/or Bioinformatics.
  • Experience leading the writing and publishing of your research in refereed scientific journals.
  • Recommendations from doctoral supervisor(s) and/or mentor(s).
  • Experience presenting work at local and national meetings.
  • Obtained training, career development, or research funding as a graduate student desirable but not required.

Minimum Physical Requirements:
  • This appointment requires the ability to communicate effectively at in-person and virtual meetings, sitting for several hours a day with occasional walks to on-campus meetings.
  • Finger dexterity and proficiency in typing on a keyboard is an essential requirement of this position.
  • The workload will be heavy but manageable most of the time.
  • Pressure may arise in the face of deadlines associated research and manuscript writing.
