DUTIES
Performs specialized duties in a library requiring the use of significant specialized knowledge of the libraries functions, services, practices and procedures and/or the terminology, content, and classification of the library collection.

Performs one or more of the following types of duties:
  • Performs general and specialized research, reference and literature searching of current and retrospective information sources including online computerized databases; primary and secondary source materials; subject bibliographies/indexes; government documents; and unpublished research reports for all subjects covered by professional staff. Researches a broad range of current and retrospective materials in a variety of formats and subjects, including, but not limited to: military arts, sciences, and history, management, geopolitics, economics, history, international relations, foreign policy, computer science, current events and technology. 
  • Researches, and develops annotated/unannotated comprehensive and/or selective bibliographies, briefing guides, and specialized lists in anticipation of current needs, and in conjunction with mission requirements. Anticipates user needs by identifying relevant and timely subjects pertinent to current information requirements. Works as a member of the reference team in coordinated efforts to accomplish projects that may include other sections/branches of the organization. 
  • Interfaces directly with library users who are requesting materials not in the TRADOC Headquarters Library collection which must be obtained, either through the interlibrary loan process, or by coordination with the appropriate branch for document delivery services or purchase. Consults with specialists and colleagues in other government/non-government institutions and secures materials via interlibrary loan. Personally handles rush items. Reviews incoming interlibrary loan requests received from other libraries for completeness of citation, and researches incomplete requests; supervises flow of outgoing materials.
  • Performs cataloging, either temporary or preliminary, and original cataloging in brief form. Catalogs new editions and new volumes of work already in the library requiring careful comparison of the information contained in the books or documents and on the cards or indexes already in file. Makes notation to describe or identify material to meet the specific needs of the library. Accomplishes preliminary classification of various materials following clearly established guides and practices. Work is subject to review for conformity to library practices.
  • Aids individuals in the use of the library resources by locating materials including books, reports, journals and other documents. Instructs patrons on the location of material and the use of library tools and locates desired material through the use of card catalogs and indexes. Refers difficult reference questions based on incomplete information or information varying with the classification practices of the library to a more experienced person within the library.
  • Arranges and processes digital and print collections, involving organizing and ordering collections so that intellectual and physical controls are achieved. Arranges and processes collections for use by researchers, which includes the preparation of finding aids and descriptive inventories of collections. Assists in the appraisal and screening of archival collections and materials.
