Summer Internship at Summer Camp for Neurodiverse Children (Camp Counselor)

Use your experience in PsychologyCommunication Sciences/Disorders or Education to provide an incredible sleep-away camp experience for a neurodiverse population. Our campers are diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, ADHD or a similar profile. Camp Akeela traditional coed New England summer camp for children between 4th-10th grade, structured in a way that develops social skills, confidence, and independence in a socially immersive community.

Counselors are the heart of camp. First and foremost, counselors chaperone, supervise, and guide campers through the day-to-day elements of camp, ensuring emotional and physical well-being, and serving as a role model. The position challenges counselors to develop and exercise professional skills that are essential for the clinical or educational workplace.

We are seeking energetic students and recent grads who will use their knowledge and experience in youth development to facilitate an enriching, safe, and fun camp experience for their campers.

Counselors will:
  • Along with co-counselors, serve as a primary leader for a group of campers, ensuring day-to-day safety and physical and emotional well-being of their campers.
  • Work with other camp staff to ensure the positive resolution of all camper-related issues by communicating clearly and consistently with camp leadership staff on a daily basis.
  • Create and maintain positive relationships with other counselors and leadership staff.
  • Be familiar with and support the successful execution of all camp policies and procedures, including safety and emergency plans.

Qualifications
  • Have completed at least one year of post-high school education (eg. college, gap year).
  • Compassionate, enthusiastic, patient, hardworking, empathetic, intuitive.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
  • Interest in working hard and positively transforming the lives of campers.
