Research Technician - Meyer Lab

Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) is an independent, ever-evolving philanthropy that supports basic biomedical scientists and educators with the potential for transformative impact. We make long-term investments in people, not just projects, because we believe in the power of individuals to make breakthroughs over time. HHMI scientists have radically advanced the understanding of cells, the brain, the immune system, the development of organs, and how to treat many diseases. Founded in 1953 by aviator and industrialist Howard R. Hughes, HHMI is headquartered in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and employs more than 2,500 people across the U.S.

At HHMI, you are not just an employee – you are a part of a creative and talented team with colleagues whose expertise ranges from biomedical research to investment management, from information technology to law. We encourage collaborative and results-driven working styles and offer an adaptable environment where employees can do their best work. As HHMI scientists continue to push boundaries in laboratories and classrooms, you can be sure that your contributions while working at HHMI are making a difference.

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, scientifically curious Research Technician to work in the lab of Dr. Barbara Meyer at the University of California, Berkeley in Berkeley, California. The Meyer laboratory carries out pioneering research on the mechanisms of cell-fate determination, genome editing, the role of chromosome structure and chromatin modification in gene regulation, and the molecular evolution of chromosome-wide mechanisms of gene control in the nematode C. elegans, with an emphasis on X-chromosome dosage compensation and sex determination. Tools used include genetics, genomics, molecular biology, advanced imaging, and structural studies including X-ray crystallography. More information about the Meyer lab can be found here:  http://mcb.berkeley.edu/labs/meyer/index.html

The ideal candidate is an organized, detail-oriented individual who will be responsible for working with Ph.D. scientists to understand key areas of developmental gene regulation and cell-fate specification, including chromosome structure and its relationship to chromatin modification and gene expression during embryo development.

Of particular interest to the lab are candidates with strong skills in molecular biology. Experience in imaging and computational analysis of big data is a definite plus. Previous research technicians from the lab have been co-authors on major scientific publications and have gained acceptance to prestigious graduate and/or medical programs.

Principal Responsibilities:
  • Perform experiments involving molecular biology, genetics, genomics, and imaging in combination with genome editing for ongoing research projects investigating cell-fate determination and chromosome-wide regulation of gene expression C. elegans.
  • Assist in computational analysis of big data generated through imaging and genomics experiments. Prior knowledge in image analysis and/or genomics data analysis will be a big plus.

Qualifications
Education
  • A bachelor’s degree in biology or a related discipline is required.

Experience
  • 1-2 years of previous hands-on laboratory experience in molecular biology is required along with a strong understanding of molecular genetics. Significant laboratory experience obtained during undergraduate studies is acceptable and will be considered.
  • Previous experience with C. elegans genetics would be a plus.
  • Previous experience with advanced imaging techniques would be a plus.
  • Previous experience with computational data analysis and coding capability in any language (preferably in Python and/or R) would be a plus.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills.
  • Superior organizational skills, prioritization skills, time management skills, and meticulous attention to detail.
  • Proficient skills in data analysis using Python and/R.
  • Ability to work well both independently and as a member of a team.
  • Ability to follow instruction with an eagerness to learn, grow professionally, and be
  • mentored.
  • Ability to interact positively with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to work efficiently, be adaptable, and be self-motivated.
