Shares key park resources like the McLean House, the freed Robinson family home, and the village's first building, the Clover Hill Tavern to visitors through informal interpretive conversations. What was the significance of General U. S. Grant accepting General R. E. Lee's surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia? What did the promise of freedom mean to the enslaved people as close as McLean's back yard and as far away as Texas? Interns research, write, and deliver 35-minute formal programs about the surrender and its legacy, and they present hands on parole pass printing demonstrations. Interns also staff the park's Visitor Center information desk and produce content for the park's social media platforms. Note: All dates and duties are contingent upon normal operations. The COVID-19 pandemic may dramatically change operations and the viability or nature of this internship.Learning GoalThe intern will work alongside the park's Client-9 Visual Information Specialist to learn how interpretation divisions use digital media to tell important park stories. They will learn how to write interpretive text for media and the park website. They will have an opportunity to gain professional experience in videography and photography. A laptop and Adobe suite will be available, along with a camera as needed. The intern also has an opportunity to shadow other park divisions and learn about the full park operation (which we can do even if it's virtual).Qualifications History, Public History, Education, Historic Preservation, and similar majors are preferred. Interns should be comfortable speaking to the public and interested in the American Civil War and Reconstruction
Participants must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. permanent legal resident ( "green-card-holder) and currently enrolled in an undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. degree program at an accredited institution of higher education during the summer internship.
Additional qualifications:
- Must be currently enrolled or recent graduate of an accredited HBCU institution
- Must be between 16 and 30years of age
- Must be U.S. citizen, U.S. permanent resident or U.S. national
- Must be able to pass a federal background check
- Work EnvironmentInterns will primarily work inside the park's visitor center (air conditioned), at the reconstructed McLean House (minimal air conditioning), and at different points on the park's landscape, including leading guided programs. Work will be indoors and outdoors, but all on easy paths and mowed landscapes. The internship will require weekend work.Vehicle/License RequirementA personal vehicle is needed.Compensation and BenefitsCompensation is at a rate of $10.50 per hour, 40 hours per week.
